Anyone else agree? Sky Sports have been showing it for a while now but now NASN have started too with the '12 steps to poker heaven' show. I haven't watched it properly but the girl presenting it is English so am I right to presume it isn't even a 'North American' programme on the 'home of North American Sports'? Get it off and show more baseball!

You could say the same about Pool, Snooker, and Darts.

And I do. They're skill games not sports.
WWE isn't sport either.

Snooker and pool are considered billiard sports.

I agree. I also question anyone who classes fishing as a sport too.

What about Bowls? I don't classify it as a sport.

i play snooker and poker a lot with mates and i always end up arguing with them that these are not sports simply because sport involves physical exertion. these are skill games, plain and simple, they require tactical thinking more than anything else. i mean, you don't need to be in shape to play these sports, though with snooker, you do need a lot of stamina

Dictionary.com.....
Sport
1.an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature
2.a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3.diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
Therefore, Poker, Darts etc is, by definition, sport?

Lol!
Poker is a sport according to the English language though as any dictionary would tell you.
What is it that people think makes something a sport rather than just a game or activity? Is motor racing a sport?
But I do find those programmes on NASN being a bit odd given they are not North American or even about North American poker players.

It hardly requires much physical exertion by the player. Would you consider a game of Snap to be sport?

Are Motor Sports really a sport then?
Its just driving , which many of us do on a daily basis.
Yes it requires good reactions, but so does a game of snap.
However I must say F-1 drivers do have to be physically fit, much more so than footballers.
Micheal Schumacher once left his personal trainer who was ex SAS, In his wake during a run in the mountains.
And what about Sailing, is that a "Sport"?

That was what the main point of my argument was. I'm a big fan of American sports and I don't want what little broadcast time there is available to me filled up with that 12 steps to poker heaven programme.

Poker is a card game involving gambling, how can they bend the definition to include this as a sport, beats me. What they are saying is that a poker player is a sportsman, aye right somebdy pass a can of reality please.

ahh but,
when you have a celebrity heat (round) you do tend to have sportsmen in it like the other night it had 6 sportmen at the table, should it be called a sport then.

Would shopping be classed a sport if you saw 6 Chelsea players walking around Tesco's?

No, it does not matter the person taking part it is the description of the card game that is the important aspect. ::)

Don't want to scare you Paul but I agree with you again.
In the dictionary definition Brady2Moss gave it says "diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime" but that could encompass just about anything. I'd sooner class competitive eating as a sport than poker.

I class that as a sport.
Its athletic (kind of, in terms of muscle use, and body function ha) and some of those guys are insane, and girls.
Its the rawest form of a sport
Would shopping be classed a sport if you saw 6 Chelsea players walking around Tesco's?
no, i was only joking
either way many people will say it is a sport and many people will say it is not a sport.
but i like said before the international olympic committee consider Bridge a sport so why not poker.

Poker is not a sport, no physical activity at all, mentally yes but come on. Bowls is sport in my opinion because they do a run up ::) but its more so of a sport than frickin cards ! Motor sport is a sport, you need to be incredibly fit and youre moving all the time and its just like a running race...but in cars... :-\ lol
