Me too, since you recommended it I've been listening. Some great insight from some great former NFL players. I have to say I can't stand Howard Eskin, he just doesn't allow any debate so it's just really boring radio.

HAHA! Most people in Philly can't stand him either!! Now it's funny to hear that Eskin's influence of annoyance now even reaches the UK!
But 610 talks a lot about the Phillies, too. So do you guys tune it out when they go off the subject of the Birds?

That's fine. For example, I don't care for cricket, but I #1) was not raised in a culture that embraces it (thus, understands it), and #2) see nothing in it that catches my eye. So I imagine your reasons are similar. :)
I think the fascinating thing with baseball is the intricacy involved in micro-strategy--right down to individual pitches. But enough about that...
Back on topic:
Here is the main rival of 610 in Philly, http://950espn.com/
You can listen live, Mike Missanelli has been pulling listeners away from Howard Eskin since they are on the air during the same time slot. I think he's a decent alternative...funny thing is that they used to do a radio show together on 610 a number of years ago.

I'm not going to lie, Flyers' games are a lot of fun in person. I also enjoy them on the TV, but people agree that seeing a hockey game in person is better than on TV. I think only NFL playoff games are more exciting than NHL playoff games. Ice hockey is more fluid, like soccer, but quicker.
If you ever get a chance to watch a baseball game, I'd recommend trying to catch a Phillies playoff game (assuming they make it) this October--I assume there's a TV channel in the UK that carries MLB games? Phillies playoff games are good since there is a lot of overlap between Phillies fans and Eagles fans, so the crowd is passionate and raucous, obviously.

I have been to a couple of Toronto Blue jays games but I was younger (they were crap) and I didn't realy enjoy them. I really want to go to a Leafs game however whenever I am in Toronto it is usually summer meaning there are no games going on.

2004 playoffs. After a long, physical, and intense series, the Flyers were one win away from winning the series and were looking to avoid a game 7 against Toronto. The game went to sudden-death overtime, it was intense!

On that final point, hockey is a really exciting sport, top two in excitement levels for a fluid sport. Number one for me has to be hurling though. Combine the hand eye coordination of baseball players and the physical ability of hockey players and you would have a rough idea of what it’s like. The all Ireland final is on this Sunday, and it’s well worth a watch.
Also what sort of time would those stations broadcast at? (UK time I mean not great at the conversion of times)

I'd recommend if any of you head to Philly, to see the Flyers or Phillies play, its a great crack. I've not seen the 76ers; it doesn't appeal at all. The nearest I've got to the 76ers is staying in the same apartment complex as AI when it all kicked 7 ish off years ago.
I managed to get a ticket rinkside when the Flyers played the Caps a couple of years back and it made me appreaciate how quick (and dirty) hockey really is. I watched a load of the MLB last year when I was off work, the MLB play offs were absolutely magic to watch! Brilliant.

I've never actually watched Hurling, but I've heard it is the fastest team sport on foot in the world. I've been told it's a brilliant sport.
You guys are at Greenwich Mean Time, so that is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. If you are asking about when Flyers games begin, they typcially begin at 7:00 PM EST, so midnight where you are. Phillies games typically start at the same time, but the playoffs have all kinds of different start times, including 3:00 PM or 8:00 PM.

Remember it well. Kapanen got slaughtered a few minutes before the goal. Went wild when Roenick scored! Tampa Bay series after it was a killer. Don't watch as much hockey nowadays (the lockout was a killer and I absolutely HATE the shootout) but always keep an eye out for the Flyers.
Phillies baseball and Eagles football are my loves. So far this season with the Phils I've missed the first game of the May double header in Washington due and 2 of the games in LA and that's it. Love the Phillies. Next Sunday with the first game of the DH against the Mutts and the game against the Panthers is going to be a day of multi tasking!

I was at one of the games of that Flyers-Tampa Bay series, the one Simon Gagne won in OT.
How do you manage to watch all of these Philly sports teams from Scotland? How did you become such a dedicated Philly sports fan?

To be honest I don't watch too much hockey nowadays. Got quite into the run in the 08 playoffs, but overall it's not a priority.
I work afternoons and evenings, so that doesn't impact. I loved the Eagles first, and when I started watching hockey baseball it seemed sensible to root for the Flyers and Phillies. I gradually grew to love them all, but it's only been the last couple of years I've been watching the Phils every night. Used to catch about 40 or 50 games a year when I was working 9-5 here, but things changed, and I got to watch more.
I'm a bit of a glory boy with the Flyers though I have to say. I struggle to watch when they're terrible, but don't miss the playoffs when they make it. Phillies and Eagles I'll watch no matter what while I'm still working the schedule I am at the moment.
I guess it's just one of those things that started as a bit of fun that grew into a big part of my life. Funny part is I've never even been to America, never mind Philadelphia! Hard to really explain how the madness happened, but I'm glad it did. Last October was perhaps the greatest moment of my sporting life, and I absolutely love this Phillies team, despite it's recent struggled. That 4 game series in Houston was a killer.
But the internet makes things so much easier. With mlb.tv for the baseball games, Sky Sports and Gamepass for the NFL, and hundreds of good sites (I'm a regular poster on http://www.philaphans.com) it's easy to keep in touch.

I think you need to go on holiday to Philly during the fall when there are overlaps between our various teams' seasons!

Eagles Yank
09-Sep-2009, 02:04 AM
So Lidge was at it again tonight. He loads the bases up in the 9th inning by hitting a guy and walking another, only to have the two best Washinal hitters up to bat with only one out. Charlie makes the decision and Madson comes in to save the game by getting the next two outs. Huge.

I've been following this. Should be really really cool to see if it takes off in Philly. I hope it does.
Lidge is a disaster. If they take him out in the middle of a save situation and then don't decide enough is enough then they're too soft. Lidge has shown few signs that he's going to get any better and I'd shut him down and hope he comes back lights out in 2010.
And while I know Madson hasn't set the world alight in the 9th, he was spectacular last night. With Myers back looking sharp then Lidge is dispensable, despite our injuries in the pen.

Can't wait for the playoffs. It's really funny how the media are writing off the Phillies because the pen has been dodgy yet love St Louis even though their bullpen is dodgy and love the Dodgers even though they've been horrible throughout September in almost all phases of the game other than bullpen pitching.
NL playoffs are wide open, and winning last year combined with Utley and Ibanez getting a chance to rest could revitalise this team. Pedro Feliz' slam on Tuesday seemed to get this offense back in a groove. Even though a lot of the backups were in tonight, we had another nice 9th inning down 5-1, putting the tying run at 1st. Love the way this team continues to fight to the death even when they game means nothing.

Hmmm. Looks like they very recently changed their Website domain under their parent owner CBS. Now I cannot get the Website to even load, let alone the audio. Not sure what's going on.
I would suggest another site for Eagles fans to checkout and bookmark: www.the700level.com
I love that site because it's a daily updated blog by several knowledgeable Philadelphia fans who usually post well-written articles.
