Which World Cup team is your NFL team?
With the World Cup just around the corner, earlier today talk in the NFL office turned to which NFL teams shared characteristics with World Cup teams. As you will see from the list below, while there were some easy fits that seemed to make sense, there are also some very tenuous links!
Buffalo Mexico near the border and no-hopers
Miami South Africa this years hosts with no chance of making the final
New England France team of the 2000s but on the decline now
New York Jets England lucky win in the 1960s being talked up now like they are a sure thing when in fact it definitely wont happen
Baltimore Cameroon Always dangerous, and physical nobody wants to come up against them
Cincinnati Algeria Up and down team who blow hot and cold from one year to the next
Cleveland Switzerland No great expectations from a team whose defense has more holes than Swiss cheese
Pittsburgh Germany Efficient team who win big games through defense
Houston Slovakia An expansion team (in their first World Cup)
Indianapolis Spain Favourites with lots of offense
Jacksonville Serbia Does anyone honestly want to spend time in either of these places?
Tennessee USA tough to beat with a no-nonsense head coach
Denver Paraguay Recent doubts about their passing game from a team used to playing at altitude
Kansas City Nigeria Christian The Nigerian Nightmare Okoye played here that was good enough for me
Oakland Argentina Villains of the World Cup with a history of winning championships and a controversial coach
San Diego Holland Pretty to watch but ultimately disappointing
Dallas Brazil Brazil is the World Team just as Dallas is Americas Team
New York Giants Ghana Traditionally the strongest team in their region and theyre both nicknamed the G-Men (I think)
Philadelphia Portugal Have not won the big one this decade despite having a golden generation
Washington Japan Lots of money in the game but nothing to show for it recently
Chicago Italy A history of strong defense and championship calibre teams
Detroit North Korea Walk the streets of these northern locations and something bad will happen
Green Bay Uruguay Winners of the first World Cup and Super Bowl match up nicely
Minnesota Ivory Coast Could be among the worst or best depending on the arm of their star player (Brett Favre / Didier Drogba)
Atlanta New Zealand The proudest moment of both teams is a defeat NZ lost 5-2 to Scotland for their most memorable moment, while the Falcons only Super Bowl appearance finished in a 34-19 loss to Denver
Carolina Slovenia Another expansion team (See Jacksonville and Houston)
New Orleans Chile Attack-minded teams with a coach who loves to watch film
Tampa Bay South Korea Shock semi-finalists in the 2002 season had their big year at the same time as the Buccaneers Super Bowl win
Arizona Greece Unfancied team came through to a shock final appearance and its scorching in both places
San Francisco Denmark Both teams wear red and have not won anything since the 1990s despite being a popular choice for fans
Seattle Australia Seattles better known for coffee and Frasier than for their Seahawks, while Australia is associated with cricket, surfers and barbecues, not football
St Louis - Honduras - OK, maybe this wasnt a very good idea!
Can you follow my admittedly poor effort with any of your own? Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Interesting combination of New England and France given that Thierry Henry's handball in the World Cup playoff against Ireland was a clear and fragrant breaking of the rules.
Enough said. |

If memory serves me correctly, Paraguay is mostly grassy plains with some wooded hills to the east. The west of the country is mostly low, marshy plains.
Apparently :-) |

this is an article for the same thing on bleacher report:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/4...ch_query=world cup nfl cant say i disagree with much of this, although the Chiefs one had little to no thought about it |

Amazing what you can learn with a bit of Wikipedia help !!
Shame none of you thought immediately: "Neil is a well-travelled man who has obviously spent some time in Paraguay." |

Lol Neil good link between France and New England when it comes to cheating and breaking the rules. I hadn't noticed that actually.

Yh definitely like the France and New England link as Neil Reynolds said, I'm still gutted Ireland aren't in it. Like the Baltimore one, although hopefully we have a bit more chance of winning next years superbowl than Cameroon have in the 2010 World Cup.
As well as that St.Louis and Honduras is fantastic, sorry St. Louis fans but you've got to admit thats pretty funny. |

the germany-steelers one is definatly the most clear one.
both are teams that have no problem winning, and can both play big in tournaments or playoffs. i would also put chicago with Australia because they both show moments of greatness and can cause a surprise. i would also put mexico with the texans because mexico are very attacking minded(well they used to be) and the texans are a very offensive team. I like the Denmark-Niners pairing. both teams have potential and are improving. And i completely agree with the Philadelphia- Portugal one. yeah, a good idea and very well done. |

Honduras may not be well known but if I'm not mistaken they are ranked 38th in the world at the present time while the Rams are clearly the worst team in the league. Other than this your article is pretty solid. However I am not saying Honduras will cause big upsets or anything they will struggle but they are not as bad as everybody believes them to be.

Love it; unfortunately the Chargers link with Holland is so true. The Oakland one has to be my favourite, as well as the brilliant connection between Arizona and Greece. Ivory Coast/Minnesota is genius.
May have switched New Orleans to Spain as they've only recently won a major championship and have a lot of flare and switched Cleveland and Miami around. Brilliant stuff. |

I would have put St Louis with New Zealand. Both have no chance of doing anything and then there is the factor of New Zealand having 13 times more sheep than people.

Completely wrong. I have no idea what your knowledge of the NFL is like, but you know nothing about football.

If I'm correct, Hank has a lot of knowledge of the NFL, and the point of the topic I believe was not to just draw similarities between how good/bad the NFL teams are to the World Cup countries but to also draw cultural comparisons as well, which I feel Hank did brilliantly.
What would your comparisons have been, Cloud? |

I'll freely admit that I know nothing about 'soccer' and don't particularly wish to either! It wasn't meant to be taken quite so seriously... sorry you didn't enjoy it, Cloud_VII

Well as a 9er. Denmark? Cos they both wear red? Come on. Their at least 1 of the biggest most historic franchises in the NFL. That's what annoyed me, more than anything else. I didn't mean to annoy you, I was just pissed off. I might do 1 of these in the future for club football. For example Dallas Cowboys = Manchester United (most supported, successful) , SF 49ers = Liverpool (strong history, still a big franchise despite lack of recent success) etc.

I take it you have never been to Serbia then,My advice is go and then rethink the comparision.
Detroit twin...don't even get me started? But I will forgive you ![]() |

I'd say my Cowboys are more Germany. Always good, always resplendent in their white but hated by all other fans.
Jeez Saints fans won't be happy with Chile comparisons! I'm going Saints and Spain, no success until recently but now both with near unstoppable offenses. You must have put some work in though, best article I've seen on here for a long time. Infact since my mock draft (joke)! No seriously though, great, great stuff. |

I wouldn't say Spain have an unstoppable offense. They focus MUCH more on possession than all out attack.
