Default 2017 Offseason Thread - News, Free Agency, all that jazz

So we enter the season of hope....

What are your teams;

Key free agents
Areas that need improving most
And most likely arrest

Pats wise they got 50m worth of cap space, likely gonna have two first round picks once Jimmy G is traded - Billy is alright at this NFL lark

Here is the current cap situation for every team

This is of course before any free agents are re-signed/tagged, and each team needs to sign their draft class too. The cap has gone up generously again, which shows how much money the NFL is making. The Browns have by some distance the most cap room at $97m spare - and they've already re-signed Jamie Collins. 49ers are next with $80m, followed by the Titans and Patriots. At the other end the Cowboys and Jets are already over so need to cut some players before they can sign. The Chiefs ($3m), Eagles ($7m) and Ravens ($15m) don't have much wiggle room.

The Eagles are without doubt the team that mortgaged the future the most, with a cash-to-cap spending ratio of 1.6 last year. The next most was 1.3 and most teams were around 1.0-1.1.

Most important free agency move for the Raiders will be for one who isn't actually a free agent - Derek Carr is eligible for a contract extension, with at least $50m spare we have the cap space to offer him a good deal but that will impact on other moves. His injury might throw a spanner in the works, not expecting any issues with his recovery but Reggie McKenzie might hold off making an offer until he has shown he is fully recovered.

Going to be a very interesting off season for the Bears.

Top of the list will be Cutlers destiny, which is looking likely to be out of Chicago somewhere, then there is Alshon to sort out, he had a down year but I want to see us give him a deal.

Priorities are obviously QB and we need to upgrade the secondary, Kyle Fuller is not looking worth the first that was spent on him.

Le'Veon Bell is our biggest free agent. He'll be back one way or another unless he does something stupid in the offseason. I'd rather tie him into a deal than tag him because it gives more flexibility to insert specific weed-related wording into the agreement re forfeiting bonuses etc. We also need to re-sign LT Villanueva, I'd like to bring back Timmons for a reasonable price too and ideally OLB Chickillo for depth plus hopefully Harrison can do another year at similar salary or a bit more, and we also need to re-sign Ross Cockrell who has become a starter. Jury's out on Landry Jones.

I'm not buying Roethlisberger retiring for a second. Of the high cap players ($5m plus under contract already) Ladarius Green is the one one likely to be moved on, depending on health and draft. I don't expect Jarvis Jones to be back, nor Sharmarko Thomas, and I reckon they might let Wheaton walk as well, especially if Bryant is reinstated and can convince the team he's grown up. I'd expect WR to be addressed somewhere in the draft but not high.

Main draft needs: OLB, TE, DE rotation, WR, RB depth, S, QB ??. Pass rush is definitely the biggest need.

We're a mess from top to bottom and have no cap room (at least to start with). Expecting a massive roster overhaul this offseason...

it was reported yesterday that Kyle Shanahan may try to take the Atlanta QB coach to the 49ers as his OC.if this happens Chip Kelly's name got linked to the Falcons as long as he kept as much of the current playbook in place.

think the raiders can extend Mack this off-season and maybe try to do what the Texans did with Watt and get a bit of discount for buying out his last year of his rookie deal and the 5th year option.sure i read the Raiders have to spend before march as they are under the 4 year minimum "cash spend floor" that came in with the last CBA

Romo's $24.7m will come off the books one way or another, then the Cowboys probably shuffle some money around in Tyron Smith's 10 year contract too. Lee and Witten might get their contracts manipulated too. Basically the FO will create as much cap space as they need.

The offence is pretty much set (with Romo's departure). Ron Leary probably leaves in FA to be replaced by the cheaper La'el Collins. They probably need a #2 WR, or at least some depth but that could depend on Terrance Williams/Bryce Butler and who is available.

The focus will be on defence. Outside of Bryon Jones, Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown the secondary is in flux. They need to decide on the durability of Brandon Carr or the 'upside' of Mo Claibourne, or both. Bringing back Barry Church is probably a on their list of priorities too.

Don't see how they can fix the pass rush in FA, just don't think the top names will be out there. Same goes for CB really.

They'll add a veteran or 2 but focus on the draft. Fingers crossed for Jaylon Smith too.

Teams don't 'have' to spend up to the 89% cap floor. Any underspend goes to players who were on the roster from 2013-16. Obviously you would prefer your money to go on your current players but the money gets spent one way or the other.

Raiders can exercise the 5th year option on Mack when his contract is up next year so there is some flexibility there.
