Falcons coach Mike Smith confirmed Adam Schefter's report early Thursday that Harry Douglas (ACL tear) is out for the year.
"It's disappointing to have Harry's season end before it got started," Smith said. The Falcons are on the lookout for a new punt returner, slot receiver, and potentially a new flanker. Douglas will go to injured reserve shortly

On the Bills grapevine there is rumors that it could be Roscoe Parrish for draft picks. He ticks all the boxes your coach wants and he wants a trade

Just get Matt Ryan to return punts as he is clearly God Mark II :p

He is ranked number 2 out of all active players for punt return yards only behind Devin Hester. It's helped out by the Bills having the best special teams coach around but the guy has a lot talent.

Why is he on the block then?

Harry is not a huge loss for us. Losing Turner or White would be!! He is more of a threat for us in the return game next year as I firmly believe that Gonzlaez will line up in the slot... especially on 3rd down plays.

One thing this injury has highlighted - GET RODDY INTO CAMP SOON!!! Either pay him what he wants or tell him no deal. The player will have to play and he can't become an unrestricted free agent until 2011... All those $16k fines will add up then Roddy son!!!!

Douglas was even more important after the Gonzalez acquisition. I pegged Douglas for having a breakout year in my articles on the back of the whole defense being stretched and focusing on Gonzalez.

Unless someone is signed i see this a massive boost to Thomas Brown's chances of making the roster..maybe even at Jason Snelling's cost.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The scene is taken from the film "The downfall" (which I highly recommend).

Ha, funny video. Good stuff.

Watching the defence last night made me cringe on so many occasions it's defiantly got me worried. I knew with the new starters on defence there would be a transition period but Rivers torched our secondary last night and what made it worse was the 3rd down conversion rate. Giving up 3rd and short is somewhat acceptable but 3rd and 17 and even 3rd and 24, which ended up as a screen pass for a touchdown, oh my word, not cool.

I'd love for our current crop of secondary players to step up and hopefully I'm just over reacting and that this will allow us to work all the kinks for the upcoming season.

On the other hand the offence looked sharp as usual it seems. And it was sweet seeeing Redman make that touchdown pass on 4th down with :15 left on the clock, even though it is still pre-season.

Our 3rd down defense against the ghargers both pass rush and secondary play was awful. Must improve for regular season.

Well after watching it i agree our defence could be a problem cause we have got rid of defensive players but not got any experience to replace it. Lets hope that abraham can get some sacks more that last year.

We have traded for Tye Hill from the Rams..gave up a 7th for a '06 1st rounder but he's been plagued with injuries.

In Houston and Hill we have 2 very fast CB's anyone think we might change up coverages and move away from the C2 roots?

I never understand why more teams don't do trades like this - yes the odd 7th rounder comes good ( see Colston :D ) but by and large they rarely make an impact. Better to have a guy with much more potential in new surroundings, surely?

falcon_91
02.09.2009, 03:29 PM
Personnally im very happy with it, we are already stacked with picks due to trade downs last year and we cant have enough people battling for the #2 CB spot and even challenging Houston.

If he stays fit and players to a 1st rounder that he was picked in he will do well for use. We only gave up a 7 th pick so if he don't work out just get 1 in next years draft.

Awesome stuff! The defence was great today, Peterson played extremely well as did most of our defence. Both JA55 and Beer-man with 2 sacks a piece was promising to see, especially with someone other than JA55 in the sack column on the stat sheet. Here's hoping Delhomme plays just as well, as he did this week, against us! And there's a bit more running room for the Burner, I think our offence can only get better as the season unfolds.

falcon_91
13.09.2009, 11:59 PM
Delhomme is done, the panthers giving him a 5 year deal is laughable and will put that franchise back a year or 2 as they will be too scared to draft a high QB with delhomme sat on that sort of money

bens falcons
14.09.2009, 12:25 PM

Talks about the big 3 we have had on eoffense over the last 2 years - Ryan, White,,Turner. The thing that stood out to me is that Turner says THIS is our window this year and next, even though all 3 are signed for the next 5-6 years

Alot of talk about the falcons inquiring about Glenn Dorsey.

Personnally i would love this as at the time i want him over Ryan, and i think if he is used to his full potential in the 4-3 he will/can still be a beast.
Having said that i wouldn't want to give our 1st even though it will be late i thnk we have too much of a need at LB - Peterson is only going to have so many years left and im not completekly won over by Nicholas/Wire

He'll have to prove that. Yes, hes fast, but is he reliable? We shall see.

He proved how good a player he was in his rookie year, when he was ahead of Finn in the depth chart. Most people in the know touted him for a breakout year last year before his injury.

If he wasnt injured he'd be at no 3 behing Jenk and White fighting for the no 2 spot, so Jenk being injured doesnt change the fact hes better than Finn in the eyes of the franchise and anyone that has watched them both play.

Doesnt matter how nice a guy Finn is and how loyal hes been, hes just not as good.

mike_vick7
11.08.2010, 04:49 PM
How can you say finn isnt as good? Hes a much better pass catcher than jenkins for damn sure. 3 down where do you throw? Number 86, because you know its gonna be a catch. Much as i love Jenk, he drops too many balls.

Because he isnt as good, youre crazy if you think he is. He may catch it, but means nothing if he catches every ball for no gain because he can't get any yards after catch.

And on 3rd down id rather throw to Gonzalez who's get better hands either way.

Agree, to be honest i am surprised that Kerry Meier is not being used more in preseason. The guy needs to be given a chance to show what he can do in games after impressive performances in camp and at the scrimmage (unbelievable catching ability.)

Harry Douglas is still a few weeks away from getting any game time, although i believe if he starts this year with the form he showed pre injury then he has to take the Number 2 receiver slot.

Meier will get his chance later in the preseason schedule, he's one of the leading names of the backup squads (if that makes sense).

Unbelieveable to think he went to college as a QB and then changed to WR just to get in the team quicker.

22.08.2010, 11:48 AM
How much should we be reading into these preseason games, I know that the starters only play a small part of the game (I think Ryan was withdrawn before half time on Thursday.) but the manner in which we seemed to fold once they got ahead has left me concerned.

This occured all last season when the Falcons took the lead they won the game, but once an opposing team builds a small lead the Falcons seem to always lose the game. I am remaining postive through the results of other teams at the moment. Preseason means nothing as shown by the Colts having lost twice (they have got to be competetive this year) and only four home teams winning out of the fourteen games played so far this weekend.

The Offensive line has been branded the nastiest in the NFL, placed in the top ten, sometimes five for talent but they have yet to get anywhere near showing that form.

On a positive note Turner is looking good , Ryan has impressed already showing how he has improved by finding more options. In seasons past he would nearly always throw to Roddy regardless of whether he was the best option or not. He is now showing that he is getting selective throwing short to TG and other receivers, the Rookies are settling in well.

So getting back to my previous question, are these performances simply Coach Smith getting the team ready for the Steelers and beyond or are the team showing some worrying weaknesses which have not been addressed from last year?

bellinter1

Maybe with your new offensive co-ordinator Ryans playbook opens up a bit more.
He has a lot of talent but Smitty seems too conservative at times and being a passing
game now he needs to take a few more risks.
I liked the 4th& short call, it just
didn't work out at the time. Paytons called plenty of dumb plays in his time and failed
miserably some have also worked out well so yoy've got to keep rolling the dice.

I think the south is yours this year , we've got too many off field distractions also
the super bowl is in the dome this year and no team has come close to hosting it yet.

Helpful post by Packman there, not much changes around here.

Anyway, Season is shaping up nice for us, been following everything since march thru pre season, and I'm excited about our team this year. An upgraded(As if it wasnt loaded already) offense, with what could and should turn out to be the missing piece, in Steven Jackson. He has fit right in with us, and has shown since day one on the practice field that he is as hungry as ever.

People worried about our depth, especially at line backer. I think its safe to say we've put some of those questions to bed, after finding what look to be real UDFA gems, in Paul Worrilow, and Joplo Bartu.

The effect Osi Umenyiora will have on defense will be huge. Not only can he get the sacks Abraham got, and maybe more, he can also give needed guidance to our young, but hungry defensive line, something Abraham never seemed to do. Young players flourish under vet guidance, and Osi will do what Asante Samuel has done for our ball hawking secondary. Look how far we've come in that area, in just a couple if seasons. He will also be a huge asset for Rookies Trufant and Alford.

The one hole, is the O line. Personally, I don't think it will be as bad as people think. Matt is very good at getting rid of the ball quickly, and accuratly. An O line also needs time to gel, and we have new starters in key positions. I would not mind seeing a FA guard or tackle signed, as a vet presence, whilst adding depth is never a bad thing when you put new starters on the o line.

I cannot wait for sunday, when we show the league what this team can really do! RISE UP ATL!

Commiserations on last night. Had you down to win the division before the season started, very surprised to see you at 1-4 considering the Offensive firepower you have. Never been a big fan of Mike Smith, too negative and too many poor in-game decisions for me and it's clear you need serious reinforcements on both lines. Good luck for the rest of the season....

So Falcon fans, how are you feeling about the org and FO right now. I haven't been surprised with your slide but e injuries have killed you.

Yes Injuries have played a part but that is no excuse. The more I watch us and think about it, the more blame I put on Thomas Dimitroff. The Injuries have exposed our lack of depth, this is down to his tendency to trade up. Julio Jones, Desmond Trufant etc.....

For years now, we have brought in a player, saying this is the final piece to win the SB. You don't win that way though. In next years draft, I want us to trade back and assemble more picks. Both the defensive line and offensive line are shocking. Dimitroff doesn't have a good record on judging D/O linemen. Peria Jerry was picked in the 1st round ahead of Clay Matthews  and has been a complete bust. He also paid big money in free agency on Ray Edwards who was one of the biggest busts in our franchises history.

Sam Baker was another 1st round pick and after years and years of poor play, he has one decent year in his contract year and we pay him big money to be injured all this season  Another terrible pick. Lamar Holmes was a 3rd rounder and so far this season has been abysmal (Yet I do see potential). On the defensive side of the ball, we have suffered from not spending high draft picks on pass rushers. Biermann and Maponga (Rookie) were 5th rounders, Goodman (Rookie) and Massaquoi 4th rounders and Matthews a 7th rounder to go along with Osi Umenyiora. Then front office, wonder why QB's have all day in the pocket against us?!

Coaching plays a big part too because we never seem to develop any of our defensive linemen. I think it is a bit of both; We aren't drafting enough talent and they aren't getting developed properly. Under Mike Smith, we play way too conservative once we get a lead and we fail to ever make half time adjustments. In the playoffs, our flaws were clearly shown; an inability to cover the oppositions tight-end because of poor linebacker play. Did we draft a linebacker?! Of course not  Instead we have been left to rely on an injured Akeem Dent and two undrafted Rookies in Bartu and Worrilow (who are clearly out of their depth).

We got gashed in with the run game for most of last season and a big nose tackle was a need and a must but we yet again avoided going there instead we drafted two corner backs when we could have just got one and resigned Brent Grimes.

There is no quick fix but for the future atleast we have Ryan, Weatherspoon, Jones and Moore to build the team around. I would gut this team and completely start again.

Devilfalc

I doubt that many teams if any team could have withstood the injuries that we've had this year.

#1 and #2 WRs hurt
Starting HB and FB out
#2 HB now hurt
2 veteran OL hurt including starting LT
#1 CB out
#1 LB out
Both other starting LB's missing time
Starting LDE out

For a team whose has invested heavily in the offensive skilled position, those injuries have been fatal. Prior to last night, we'd actually been competitive in spite of the injuries.

We don't need to gut the team, and will be in a good cap position after this season. What we do need, is to use that cap space and our top draft picks on the trenches. With a couple of good additions, we'll be one of the top teams in the NFL next season, provided that we get a little fortune with injuries.

My biggest concern going forward is Mike Smith. I think we have been successful since 2008 in spite of him, not because of him. He's one of the worst game and clock managers in the NFL and I am convinced that we'd gave won the SB last year with a better HC.

I hope this seasons disappointment will make us stronger next season.

We need to draft better next year, there's alot of talent in this years draft and in my opinion, we haven't drafted as well as we should have.

Offensive Line and Defensive Tackles are a must.

Worrilow? Really?

As a rookie UDFA he has shown plenty of promise and done more than enough to be kept around. With a rookie minimum contract, he is super cap friendly as well. We have way too many other needs to be wasting picks or cap space replacing Warrillow.

I guarantee that Trueblood will be gone. I could see Nicholas being cut as well. Samuel might stay around. It really depend on the $. The same goes for Jerry, who is having his best season and might be worth keeping for depth if the money is right.

Decoud has his flaws, but does make some plays and is relatively cheap. We have enough needs without adding starting safety to it.

I've been saying for 18 months that Smith needs to go. The guy is a liability, with his horrible game day decisions (like playing his best defensive player in the 4th qtr of a meaningless wk 17 game), gutless play not to lose mentality, and appalling time management.

Our biggest problem has been injuries. When you lose half your starters in 3-4 weeks it's tough to win in such a competitive league, especially when this injuries gut the strongest parts of the roster.

Other than that, we've paid a massive price for the horrible decision to draft Julio Jones. Jones may be a good football player, but the damage caused to the rest of our roster was huge. I said it in 2011 and I stand by it - it was one of the 3 stupidest trades I've seen in 25+ years.

I'm not surprised to be honest. Although if the ball had run for us or got away with a penalty we might of had a chance. (Clutching at straws i know)

Not looking forward to the Seahawks at all. They will gash us with the run, their cornerbacks will shut down Douglas and our young WR's. Matt Ryan's form is worrying and was the main reason we lost vs. the Panthers.

On Mike Smith, I wish he would stop going on about penalties in his press conference. I would rather he just calls out the guys underperforming, our form has been unacceptable.

To be fair James, we had a touchdown chalked off because of a penalty, however soft it was, would've levelled the score on Sunday.

Teams are having a good time running on (or through the parting of the sea) hawks over the last couple of games that I've seen. I don't think we'll get more than 3 more wins, just better performances.

Another offseason we have failed to address the pass rush properly. I hate you Thomas Dimitroff. I tried telling people that we'd ignore it again this offseason but of course Mike Smith got all the blame for the last two offseasons.

Before anyone says we will draft a pass rusher at number 8, Rookie pass rushers tend to struggle until year 2 or 3 and one guy isn't going to solve it.

I can see 3 or 4 teams taking a pass rusher before we pick and if we end up taking Shane Ray this offseason will have been a complete disaster.

Happy belated Christmas from our Dirty Birds giving us a late present.

Doesn't heal all the scars picked up but here's to ending the year on a high even if we do only have a 1.26% chance of making the playoffs.

What I posted was before the Vikings and Seahawks games each kicked off so was correct at the time. However it was pleasing to see us fight tooth and nail even with such a small probability. Just hope we can perform similarly in week 17 with a winning season being all that's at stake.

Adrian Clayborn
Jake Long
Nathan Stupar

O'Brien Schofield

Bryce Harris
Shayne Graham
Kroy Biermann

FYI Sam Barrington and Shea McClennin are much worse starters at MLB than a guy who regularly leads our team in tackles, as well as putting in INT, FF and sacks.

Also ill remind you TD is the GM that picked Ryan, traded for Jones and found Freeman in the 4th round.

How you can credit him for Julio when he gave up a whole draft to get him is laughable. No players remain on the roster from the 2012 draft! Only Julio, William Moore (who will likely be let go this offseason) and Bosher remain from the 2009-2011 drafts. He wasted mid round picks on guys like Shembo and Southward who were cut after contributing nothing.

He has had years to address the pass rush and yet again this season it was non existent. Splashed loads of money in free agency on crap like Ray Edwards, an over the hill Osi Umenyiora, Tyson Jackson, Brooks Reed, Jon Asamoah, Steven Jackson..... the list goes on. Even last offseason, we didn't sign one big impact player. Tamme, Schofield, Clayborn were all okay and serviceable back ups but didn't make a big impact.

I honestly cannot think of a worse GM that got given so long to build a team and managed to get praised for building a 18-30 team over the past 3 seasons.

As for Paul Worrilow, you use Sam Barrington and Shea McClennin as comparisons. Barrington got injured for the season in week one of the season and McClennin is likely to get cut. Worrilow is a liability. If Dan Quinn has any sense, he won't be on the team next year.

"a whole draft" is nonsense - hes the best receiver in the league - thats been rated as a great trade by most in the know.

2012 was 4 years ago - the average NFL career is 2 years - that happens league wide. Anything beyond the 3rd round is difficult hence why most celebrate successes not failures - ie. Freeman.

As opposed to teams that consistently change their GM and get worse results. You have just taken the last 3 years to suit your own data out of 8 years because the first 5 were great - the NFL goes through peaks and troughs - thats why we have draft picks.

This is why TD and Dan Quinn are in charge of the team and not you - regardless of whether Worrilow gets cut or not :D

Since when should an 8-8 season from a new team in a new scheme consistute a firing.

10 Reasons to keep TD

1. Dimitroff and Quinn have developed and good working relationship that should be allowed to blossom.

2. Some of the bad player signings in free agency were attributed to the former coaching staff.

3. Dimitroff helped to turn around the franchise when it was coming out of some of its darkest days after the Michael Vick and Bobby Petrino year of 2007.

4. Dimitroff players helped the Falcons post five consecutive winning seasons.

5. The Julio Jones trade was a success.

6. Although Devonta Freeman may be a fumbler, he’s performed above his fourth-round draft status and is headed to the Pro Bowl.

7. The Falcons went to the playoffs four times and reached the NFC championship game after the 2012 regular season.

8. Dimitroff has been able to find some key undrafted free agents like linebacker Paul Worrilow.

9. With direction from Quinn and his coaching staff, Dimitroff will help to pick players who fit their systems.

10. All of his draft picks haven’t been bust. William Moore, Thomas DeCoud, Freeman, Jones and Ryan have gone to Pro Bowls. Tackle Jake Matthews and defensive end Vic Beasley are off to solid starts and could turn into Pro Bowl players.

Matthews (70) has been fairly solid but certainly started the season slow, but I think that's a reflection of how good he was last season (allowing just one sack from that side) that people are taking more notice when me makes a mistake or two.

Continued improvement from the defense will be key for us to make headway in the playoffs.

I can't grumble, I don't think many people had us at 6-3 at this point in the season when the schedule was released. I certainly think we have enough offensive firepower to notch a W over the Eagles this Sunday. If we keep this offensive onslaught up and make it all the way to SB game, I think they'd be deserving of being mentioned in the conversation as an all-time great offense.

Well that was painful to watch. After being manhandled by the Eagles Off and Def lines, I can safely say I'm glad we have a bye this weekend.

With the extra prep time, should the team take a longer, more detailed look into Wes Schweitzer at RG? Because Chester is nothing more than a turnstile at this point in time and has been declining steadily as the season has gone on.

Stubbsy #21
16.11.2016, 01:39 PM
I think the bye week has come at the right time. Give us a chance to heal up and re-focus for the stretch run. We're a much better offensive threat with Tevin Coleman in the game. I wouldn't be opposed to trying Schweitzer if he's shown anything in practice although I still think we'll spend a relatively high pick on a guard in the draft as that's clearly the weak spot on the O line. I also think RT could be upgraded as most of the pressure was coming from the right side last Sunday.

DeeFunct
16.11.2016, 03:41 PM
Do you not think that Schraeder has been 'infected' by Chester though? By that I mean he's aware that Chester is playing badly and is therefore concentrating more on extra work he may have to do to try and make up for Chester's deficiencies, rather than concentrating on his own blocking assignment?

I agree with you on the draft, thinking the front office invests most of our picks on the defensive side of the ball, with G/T being key needs, another edge rusher to start opposite Beasley and perhaps CB, as I don't see us keeping Alford around after this season.

If we're fully fit and get Freeman/Coleman involved early doors, I think we could be out of sight by the end of the first half. Seattle's O-line has been suspect for most of the season so I'm hoping to see Beasley notch up a few more sacks this weekend!

I think 10-6 is a pretty fair assesment actually, the optimist in me thinks 11-5, we kept most of our key players and I like the Mckinley pick (though in my opinion, that was an expensive trade up).

The pessimist in me says 8-8, with so many coaching changes, a SB hangover and a getting used to a new stadium may just tip the scale out of our favour a little.

Stubbsy #21

I'm undecided on this team at 4-3. Last year we were 4-3 and ended up in the Super Bowl so it can happen. We're definitely not peaking too early. With 4 of the last 6 at home I think then a strong finish to the year could line us up nicely for the playoffs although I think we'll need 10 or 11 wins just to get there.

As far as the other contenders well I think Philly will be a tough out and Seattle are always tough to beat at home. Vikings I'm not completely sold on although their defense is nothing to be sniffed at. Dallas should just shut up about Zeke's suspension and let it happen now as the longer it festers on the more chance he could be out of action come playoff time if he gets there (not that I'll complain) and they're a vastly inferior team with him not in the lineup. Rams have looked good but with an inexperienced QB and coach who knows how they'll handle the playoffs if they get there.

I'm still thinking we finish 10-6 and go in as a wildcard.

Brutal looking run in, think tonight's game is a must win if you're going to have a shot...

Agree with you about tonight, if we don't win tonight then 8-8 is probably the best we can hope for.

Must win game was won and thanks to the Rams we're now lurking in the Saints rear view mirror. Having the head to head against both Seattle and Detroit could also prove useful.

Beat the Vikings this week and I think we control our own destiny. I think the Saints are wobbling and haven't yet beaten a team with a winning record (Vikings, Pats and Rams). Panthers aren't that impressive, may have peaked too early and we should have beaten them in Charlotte.

Given the competitive nature of the division and our remaining games I can see us being on TV every week from now until the end of the year.

Wk 13 v Vikings (6pm game on Sky)
Wk 14 v Saints (Thursday Night Football)
Wk 15 @ Tampa Bay (Monday Night Football)
Wk 16 @ Saints (6pm game)
Wk 17 v Panthers (6pm game - could be flexed)

Agreed.

I'm not concerned about Detroit, more Seattle, even with their problems as it pertains to playoff seedings. Baltimore might just knock Detroit out of contention on sunday, and Rodgers if he plays will finish them off in week 17.

I can't believe we lost that, the defense seemed to have trouble with the run of the Vikings. lets hope we can will all the division match-ups coming

Gutting really, I thought we would be more competitive than that.

Well we're still alive with 2 weeks to go. However if we're going to anything more the rest of the way we need to stop playing to the level of our opponents - we should have smashed the Bucs (although some of the ref calls didn't help).

And yet win the last two and we take the division and get a home playoff game!

If you look at the playoffs last year we're currently the only NFC team in a playoff position who also made it last year!

i just want to see us make it back into the playoffs winning both games would be amazing to top the division, it always makes me nervous when we get to the forth quarter and is one score in it we have been lucky to often

So here we are. After fluffing our lines yet again (also a special mention for The Pete Morelli Show) it's down to another final game at home against Carolina.

Flexed to 21:25 kick off, I see more than shades of the 2014 embarrassment.

Glad I'm out, because watching that live might end up in a trip to the hospital from banging my head against the wall too many times.

Something else I spotted yesterday but did you see what the Aints did at halftime yesterday?

"Source tells me the Falcons are one of multiple teams discussing a Michael Bennett trade with the Seahawks. Nothing imminent but will be interesting to see how it all unfolds." - Vaughn McClure, ESPN Staff Writer.

This was reported the other day. Personally I would take Bennett despite him being an idiot as long as it won't cost more then a 4th. Would you take him?

Nevermind

Seahawks are trading DE Michael Bennett and a seventh-round pick to Eagles for a fifth-round pick and WR Marcus Johnson, sources tell ESPN.

Whilst playing Philadelphia opening game of the NFL season is exciting I think we might be lambs to the slaughter. I reckon 9-7 or 10-6. I plan to move to Canada in September so hopefully I can get to the Saints or Bengals home game on the way.
