4-0 woop woop, bye week to prepare for major contenders in the NFC

Won with running game last week n with defence this week, we have 3 really strong aspects now. Sharper is amazing, gotta be best free agent pick up by any team in the league in this offseason

I'm wondering what's gonna happen with Reggie now. That was a very costly fumble and with Bell coming back from injury soon his role will be decreasing further.

I fear he's now gonna be a punt returner and will be traded out at the end of the season. Shame but he had a poor season last year and this year's not been overly impressive so far.

Payton will work Bush into this offense - he's the kind of guy who could be average at best in the season but then in a playoff game could suddenly fire to life.

You don't trade a number #2 draft pick overall with a huge salary, I can't see anyone offering anything worth while (unless Al Davies goes silly again). With Bush in the game teams always have to gameplan for him. So what are we saying his production is worth? A Third/Second?? Can you get an X-factor player for that in the draft? I'm not so sure.

Payton is going to run with Bush until his contract at least IMO.

You may be right.

Last year i was lucky enough to see a couple of games in the Dome (Falcons and Packers). I came away wondering if Reggie was going to be on the team this year. Payton balled him out in the 4th qtr of the Falcons game and basically benched him, it wasn't caught on TV as the plays were on going but i was left in no doubt Payton won't have anyone on the team as a shirt seller.

Don't get me wrong I'd love Reggie to find his previous form and start producing but this season is looking as bad as the last one for him. With Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell showing value he's going to find it harder and harder to make the team in anything but special teams.

Just my opinion and i hope he can turn it around.

Traded!? No way.

You don't come across players like Reggie Bush very often, there is no way Payton will trade him.

And poor season last year?! He had the most touchdowns in the NFL until he got injured. The injury totally ruined his season in my opinion he never looked at 100 percent once he came back. As a between the tackles rusher he has been disappointing so far in his short Saints career, but the amount of possibilities he brings to our offense is a massive plus. As Thaidai says teams always have to gameplan for Reggie Bush and what he brings, much more so that they have to for Pierre Thomas or Mike Bell, even if they are better at running up the gut.

People seem to have short memories. Reggie is absolute money and I have every faith in him showing it again this season.

Huge game this weekend for us. Going to be a tough one as the Giants are up there as one of the best teams in the NFL. Good that its on sky sports. Hopefully with it being played in the Dome this can give us an advantage.

Would love to see Shockey getting a TD.

Good its on sky? Great its on sky. Its a massive game regarding the NFC race.

I read an article on Nola.com about Shockey. Put it this way he's going to be pumped beyond belief. He owes the Giants one in his mind. Big time. With no Boley to cover him as well, think he'll go wild.

I have gamepass but its always good when its on sky as it means i dont have to worry about any of the usual problems with gamepass.

Starting to get nervous about this game already. Think it might be the most important of the season.

I thought that was one of the most complete games I have seen the Saints play against a very good team. We dominated on both sides of the ball and could/should have won by a larger margin.

I am seriously juiced about our chances this year. The defence is completely changed from last season in their pursuit of the ball and aggression. Bree's is running the offence with absolute precision and the only thing, if you're nit picking, that came off poorly today was special teams.

I wrote blog updates at the end of each quarter as you can read here http://saints-nfl.blogspot.com/

You'll see I just got too excited by what I was seeing. Roll on Miami!

Good win last night. Dont think we played our best at all. 4 turnovers and an onside recovery was not good enough.

I've been saying it since week 1!

Good win but I must say I really didn't like the look of our D without Ellis, Clancy and Fujita though. Struggled a lot against the run, although I suppose we won't be facing Willams and Stewart every week! Hopefully get Fujita back for the Rams at least.

Saying that our offense is just so clutch it doesn't really matter. The way everyone contributed in the 2nd half was money.

Hopefully get these two road games out the way, get to 10-0 then take on the Pats at the Dome for a bit of a showdown... which I've just got tickets for!!

Intresting question from Saints report was when do you think this season will be as good as 06?

I think that due to everything that went on that year we would really have to win the NFC championship game to better that year. Everything from the Blocked Punt, the Drew signing, Drafting Reggie and the run to the NFC championship made it a very special year.

Sorry Guys don't mean to be pessemistic.

But last year we had a QB who could win a shoot out. This year we have a running game to help the pass and can also play a bit of D.

More importantly we seem to have belief, guts and the will to win. Combine that with a little luck and we have it all.

It's doing it at the right time in the season and followng it through. If we get to 10-0 the hard work starts.

MarkC07

Yea horrible isn't the right word for it.
So annoyed as we threw that game away. We had chances but it seemed to easy for us after the first 3 drives.

Not been this annoyed after a saints game since the Vikings mmf last year when we lost ever after reggies 2 punt return tds.

They entered the playoffs on a pretty horrible run didn't they? and still managed to make the SB.

I dont think we should all be so down fellas if we would have been offered the number one seed at the start of the year not one us wouldnt have snapped your hand off. Once it becomes an important playoff game in the Superdome it will absolutely rock and there isnt one team that im scared of I ask you one question which franchise would you swap with at the moment? I wouldnt swap with anyone come on the Saints!

DarrenSQh
29.12.2009, 06:59 PM
No 1 seed!!!!

Not at all how you want to clinch it but you have to be delighted at being the best team in the NFC over the regular season for the first time.

I think that if the pumped up team that destoyed the Giants and Pats turns up
then we can beat anyone in the play offs. Conversely if the team that went
to Washington and stayed in the locker room for the 2nd half this weekend
turns up then we`re stuffed. The optomist in me say`s after the week off we
will have our missing guys back and come out flying. SP has some big plays up his
sleeve and I suspect they involve Reggie - not his biggest fan mainly due to the hype
and his fragility- but he can produce stunning plays at times so.... fingers crossed!

Strange one. He has been performing badly for weeks. Maybe not going to be a big miss. Probably isnt worth the money we pay him.

If Smith had someone on the other end helping him then the defense would be so much better.

Superb performance from the Saints hopefully Dallas and Minnesota will have a ding dong battle like Arizona did because they looked jaded last night! Im hoping for overtime again and maybe an injury or two to DeMarcus Ware and Terence Newman not that I want them to be career threatening or anything just a couple of weeks! Although maybe it should be on the offensive side of the ball because we could score against any defence really!

Wow a Saints thread with only one REAL saints fan posting ;)

I've never been fond of the Saints . I've always seen them as being negative and boring but however they have always proved me wrong by playing well (occasionaly). When Brooks,Deuce and horn play well they can be exciting (not quite as exciting as the Colts trio) In many ways they are similar to the Colts: Exciting offense (when they want to be) and poor D (although I think the Colt's is on the up)

How can you say the saints are boring with people like Reggie bush, Marcus Colston and Jeremy Shockey! and the D is getting better the safetys and CB are doing the job espiecially sharper!

Love your confidence boys! Just have to work out how to beat Manning now? Obviously keeping him off the field is a big thing but I think we can move the football on them everyone keeps talking about their speed on Defence but I still think they are quite undersized so our recievers can use the bodies especially the tight ends who should be used on quick routes to try and nulify Mathis and Freeney. The biggest thing I believe though is special teams the Jets missed two field goals which gave Manning a short field and the Patriots went for it on 4th and 1 again to give him a short field I dont think we should be afraid to punt and make him drive 80 plus yards down the field which also takes time off the clock. Maybe trading up for Morstead who can pin the Colts back a bit may not look so stupid come a week on Sunday.........hopefully!

How cool is this.

On the spot, Schottenheimer didn't want to lie. No, he told Brees, they were going to pick a quarterback. It turned out to be Eli Manning, who was swapped for Philip Rivers. "That would be the worst decision this organization ever makes," Brees told Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer never will forget the tone in Brees' voice and the look on his face. "It was extreme, extreme seriousness," Schottenheimer said. "He wasn't playing around."

"After the parade last night there was a private party at Mardi Gras World where the parade ended. Where did Drew go? He strolled into Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar by himself...no security...no "entourage" and sat down to have a drink with the fans. Heard on the radio he even got up with the mike and led the crowd with his pre-game chant."

ok lads now lets look forward to next season. i hear that the chiefs are looking to trade or are at least listening to offers for DT Glenn Dorsey. lets not forget here, this is the guy the saints wanted back in 08 before ellis. how good would it b if the saints traded for him, i mean hes not fitting into the 3-4 system. i think we were something like 21st or 23rd against the run last year and imagine were we would be if dorsey and ellis were controlling the middle. what do u think??

I don't think we trade for him. They will give hargrove another chance.

I don't think we trade for him. They will give hargrove another chance.

I dunno, I wouldn't see Ellis and Hargrove starting as our DT pair next season cos they essentially do the same job. They're both penetrators looking to get to the QB so Hargrove is the guy I see backing up Ellis or joining him on obvious passing situations to get in the backfield.

If we could put Dorsey and Ellis together then I think we'd be looking really good on that front line. Dorsey is the bigger body and so should be pretty stout at stopping the run. Having said that though I hardly watched any of the Chiefs last year so I don't know exactly what the guy's strengths are.

LT would be a useful addition in spreading the load of Thomas and Bush. But his wage demands would be too large. And Mike Bell looked good in the early part of this season anyway.

If Benson is willing to stump up the cash, you can't say no to LT!

Imagine that backfield!

Also I agree with the guy about about not being able to play Hargrove and Ellis together, they are both too undersized. Haven't seen enough of Dorsey to comment either really, but I have faith in the front office bringing in a good run stopping DT to play alongside Sedrick.

Fujita visiting Browns... He's gone IMO, think we want to get younger at the position.

I hate the call if we let Fujita go.

Out of our linebackers he's the best against the run by some way.

It's the one area we should be looking to improve on, not get weaker.

Getting rid of Fujita and drafting some tosser like Weatherspoon would be criminal in my opinion. Weatherspoon isn't a Saints type player, he's a jerk. Fujita on the other hand is a model professional.

Admittedly never met the guy but everything I've read about Weatherspoon says he is a locker room big mouth who thinks he's the nuts.

I thought Shockey was a tosser when we signed him as well, but he plays his heart out and has won me over completely. I now love watching him play because you can tell every single opposition player hates him. Still, at least when we signed him he'd had a bit of production under his belt over the years and the trade looked value.

Weatherspoon on the other handhand... picking someone like that with your first round pick. Some jumped up kid who's proved nothing with an average skill set... no thanks.

Before yesterday I thought we'd never do it. Now I'm not so sure. We've created a need at outside linebacker that we didn't even need to create. Yeah in an ideal world we'd have better than Fujita and Shanle, but in the real world we need much better than Chucky Grant and Tony Hargrove. You can't pick up the positives Fujita brought to the team straight away now.

We talking about the same Sean Weatherspoon?

Everything I've heard about him says he's a vocal, passionate leader who loves the game. Not too dissimilar to Ray Lewis in that respect.

And you've clearly not watched Weatherspoon if you think he has an average skill set.

Your point was "the Saints don't have Jerks on their team".

1. They do.

2. Weatherspoon isn't a jerk.

Nope never seen him play... I only watch the SEC with any kind of regularity. I doubt there are many people on this forum who have seen him enough to actually form their own opinions on him. I'm just going by what I read that he hasn't got the size to play olb and will probably switch, and also that he is a loud mouth who spent his college career criticising his team mates ans pretending he was on American idol - he is not the big framed kind of run stopping olb we want on our roster. That is our weakness.

As for the saints locker room it's a pretty together one in my opinion. Shockey has pretty much become one of the leaders of the team and I don't think anyone else is that brash.

I don't want a first round olb end of. D-Line is the most pressing need by far. Were going to have to pick up an olb now, I just hope we don't scedule our off season on the player above.

As for Arnoux I think it's a lot to ask for him to start after his injury. I'd imagine casillas will be ahead of him on the depth chart now. No one on our roster is good enough to start next year now Fujita is gone to be honest! When he was injured we missed him a lot. We'll have to pick someone up now which is annoying, but the d-line is still the priority. Why we didn't give fujita a new contract and start devloping projects like Arnoux and Casillas I'll never know.

Got to agree with Bruschi - Weatherspoon is definitely no Clausen. But if he was I wouldn't care. We've just lost one of our best, and most vocal, players (see his 'welcome to training camp' speech). A vocal player/leader with a passion for the game is not a bad replacement, in fact it'd be a darn good one. If it turns out his skill set isn't good enough then noone at the Saints will listen to him - as noone did to Shockey in his first season with us.

I'm surprised they let Fujita go - but I know the Saints are sticking to their guns on not overspending. It always makes me envious when I cast glances to teams like the Bears but I know its for the best. In any case we have Casillas, who the staff are high on, and a draft class with some quality OLBs. OLB still isn't probably a priority need (Ayodele anyone?), but you can bet the Saints want 'Spoon' to be the best player available at 32.

08.03.2010, 02:01 PM
yeah but is weatherspoon really that much better than stanley arnoux?

Yeah. Though it's hard to compare them from what I'vee seen (Arnoux was an MLB).

In any case if the Saints get Spoon I'm happy. If they don't I'm happy. We're at 32 - there is no point reaching for a positional need when we don't really have one. I agree that Ayodele and Hargrove aren't top caliber but they still won a SB and given the Saints bits and bobs team they don't need 'stars' beyond Brees.

I'd hate to lose Sharper, or any of these guys, but for the time being the coaching and general staff have nothing but my faith - they do after all know exactly whats happening.

DeanMoriarty
08.03.2010, 02:24 PM
doesn't seem ...to me anyway... that our defense is overly reliant on outside linebackers. seems the focus is on secondary ball hawking, and pass rush penetration. then all we need a couple of reliable (not overly special) lbs to plug up holes and pick up stops... we aren't particularly special at run stopping, as perhaps Addai's performance showed in the superbowl. There is Vilma of course.

Substitute
08.03.2010, 02:53 PM
I think the LBs are important, but only really important when Greer and Porter are unhealthy. We went to alot more zone and double coverage without those guys and the pass defence suffered with the run defence getting worse. I still think our OLBs could stand to be improved, particularly with regards to speed or athleticism (and I'm really not a HWS guy). Williams sent the LBs on the blitz alot - a Bowman or Weatherspoon (or anyone of the similar style players lower down) would really be an upgrade in that regard. There is no massive but I'd like to see our run defence and TE coverage improve (we gave up a lot of yards if only a few TDs) and these can be improved through the linebackers. With Vilma and a couple of good youngsters at LB and a couple of d-line additions I think this defence could be top 10 or better.

Well Mick Bell's gone to Philly.

What are people's thoughts on this one?

I think it's a fair move personally. Hamilton had the best conversion percentage on 3rd and short out of any of the backs, Bell kind of disappeared in the second half of the season anyway. He was a good bruising back but not integral to our offense.

Hamilton can step up and we get younger at the position.

The Fujita move I'm still very skeptical about as no-one is ready to step up and he was our best outside linebacker. This one though, I can understand.

Big few weeks now to see if we pick anyone up on defense. I still don't think we need anyone on offense, unless they're an absolute steal. I know Fargas visited last week but there is no need for him in my opinion.

And I'm very intrigued to see what we'll do in the draft...

DeanMoriarty
24.03.2010, 01:12 PM
Charles Scott, RB

in the late rounds might be an effective 3rd down back. Decent blocker and a real powerback. Could show up on 3rd and short... a situation we've been unable to convert on... that has cost us in the past.

Alex Carrington, DE

not the best pass rusher in the world but he's a big defensive end (not many of them about, a similar size to Charles Grant) and really good at stopping the run.

Sean Lee, LB

might be a good 2nd or 3rd round pick up. Apparently he's underrated because of injury, but has all the tools to excel.

The only reason a side wouldn't pick Jimmy Graham is the fact he's only really played Football for a year. No NFL GM would truely be down about his charachter - rather whether he can translate Basketball success into Football success.

Now he's had a tough life, but people look into this like it is an indicator. All the matters is that he won't be any trouble for the Saints (if his past behaviour is to go by) and that he's got tremendous upside. He's not a great player but he may will become one. And, in this Saints offence, he'd probably look damn good just wearing the uniform.

Jimmy Graham is a massive talent but lets not get caught up in his backstory and reach absurd conclusions. The past has happened, let the future roll (and a future with a hall-of-fame Graham sounds damn good).
