Jeff Fisher never benched quarterback Steve McNair when he struggled, and he was patient with Kerry Collins when the Titans started the 2009 season 0–6.

So in the wake of the Titans’ 19–11 loss to the Steelers, a game when the Titans head coach benched starter Vince Young in favor of Collins, something didn’t seem right.

It was out of character for Fisher. And now we know why. As initially reported on Sunday by The Tennessean, Young missed or arrived late for at least two meetings leading up to the Steelers game. Indications are his overall approach lacked the seriousness it needed, and it showed during his miserable performance against Pittsburgh.

It explains why Fisher made the move, and why he felt Collins gave the Titans “a better chance to win” that day.

Fisher took a beating from fans in the days following the Pittsburgh contest, yet he never threw Young under the bus. On Monday, when asked about the situation, Fisher didn’t want to go back down that road either. He said he was more focused on the Broncos, and in Young’s bounce-back performance against the Giants on Sunday.

Initially, I couldn’t understand why Fisher would mess with Young’s psyche, and pull him against the Steelers. When I first began hearing stories about Young’s approach leading up to the Pittsburgh game, however, it made a lot more sense. Now that the details are out in the open, it’s tough to argue with Fisher’s decision.

It’s now up to Young to make sure he doesn’t put the Titans – and Fisher – in such a difficult spot in the future.

Fisher has said on multiple occasions Young’s benching was a “one-time deal.’’ Judging from Young’s preparation leading up to the Giants game, and his performance in the contest, Young got the message and wants to make sure that’s the case as well

let's just hope Young learns and doesn'y make Fishers life so difficult, acting a tad spoilt me thinks.

He just benched him so Collins could add something different to the offense which clearly wasn't working in that situation. Young is still a solid starter and the future for us so we have to get used to him. It was also his first game against the Steelers D and thats a mean defence to beat even for the leagues best QB's..
