I?m getting v.nervous about losing some decent talent with the current contract talks? Brees, Nicks, Colston and even Porter!

I know Brees wants to stay, and the Saints want him to say, but they are clearly not as close as they say they are. If Brees does not sign before the start of FA I would say it is a near certainty that we will lose Nicks. I can imagine Colston will be back and Porter I see as a maybe.

The worrying thing is that Brees has not been tied up. When he said he was delaying the contract talks during this season, it now seems the reason is probably because they were too far apart. It will take time for a settlement to be reached I imagine, which would mean the tag is going on Brees. This then screws up our salary cap. Tough times ahead for Loomis...

I agree - think they are very far apart - which would probably mean Nicks going , i think Porter will also go but he hasnt played well last season - but i think we will get talented replacements - players do want to play for the saints

I'd say we're most likley to keep Nicks and let Colston go. Brees has enough targets - Graham, Moore, Meecham, Sproles to an extent - so I think the focus will be on keeping that great O-Line together.

Still, bricking it a bit about Brees' contract too! Last year the CBA, now this. Can we have a stress-free off-season one day please!

NOLA.com reporting that Will Smith has re-worked his contract freeing up about 4-5$million
on the cap.
Possible that one or 2 high earners may do the same.

Now I'm worried the whole "bounty" thing may well cause more problems here :-(

Could be worrying times ahead, but I hope things get sorted before

Fox Sports guy (Jay Glazer) saying we've put the franchise tag on Brees...

Yep, confirmed by Saints:
"The Saints have designated Drew Brees as exclusive rights franchise player, per GM Mickey Loomis."

Latest has it Saints wanted to make Brees the highest paid player in the league but his agent wanted $25 mil a year for 5 years. I hate it but there's no way the Saints could afford a contract like that without bankrupting the whole team.

Look what happened at Indy when they gave manning a blank cheque contract only for him to get injured, they had no team left as all the money went to him. Need to think of the bigger picture,I'd rather sign Graham up as a major long termer.
