Los Angeles Chargers Thread

Hey folks,

I'm a Charger lovin' Noob round these parts, but I've had a look in the offical "links to team threads" thread, and I can't believe there's no San Diego thread! :'(

Mods, please feel free to add this as the All New And Improved Chargers Thread in the official links thread.

As for Charger fans, I know there aren't many of us about, but that's what happens when you aren't one of the teams that was always on C4 in the eighties and nineties that all the glory-hunters immediately latched on to (cough-'Niners-cough). ;)

So come on Bolt fans WHERE ARE YOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Even if you are a Raiturd and just want to come in here to get out of your own thread, (sick of talking to other raider fans with the IQ of pondlife), which begs the question - if you are intelligent enough to want out, why are you a raiders fan?, doesn't intelligence disqualify you?, then come on in!, I don't descriminate I hate all things raider equally!. ;)

Anyway, Bolts need to win 4 straight to be looking at playoffs - discuss.

B.

Thanks for the greetings guys, good to know there are some other AFC West fans out there.

Barters - Nope, we play you at the Jack (still refuse to call it Qualcomm 'cos it's silly) on Hogmanay, live on SKY. Of course by then the Donks will have folded and we will be rubbing your noses in the division title again!

Chargers next four are -

BUFFALO
@ Washington
OAKLAND
MIAMI

win all 4 (feasable) we are 9-4 with still to come

@ Indianapolis
@ Kansas City
DENVER

I think we have to win 2 of those 3 to make the playoffs and possibly all 3 to win the division. Why I believe we need to win 4 straight is because someone is gonna be 10-6 and miss the playoffs in the AFC, yet the crappy NFC could have a 7-9 division winner! :-X

Hey Cooley!,

I think the Washingto trip is theoretically the toughest game of the next 4, the Skins seem like a real up 'n down team this year. The game I saw a few weeks back (Giants I think) looked like the old missed-tackle-itis was back from the Skins of a couple of years ago. Hopefully it's the hideous Skins team that turns up for this one, however Marty will still find a way to turn it into a nail-biter so don't lose hope even if your D gets shredded early on! :(

Our home record as of now is impressive (4-0) hopefully a win over the Raiders should make it 5-0 but then the Bolts will certainly be our biggest challenge.

I think Marty is a great coach so I've been keeping an eye on the chargers since he left DC and landed at SD.

The chargers next 4 games could be losses. None of those teams are going to just roll over for a jolt.

In each of those match-ups I would take the home team if i was picking so I predict 3-1.

San Diego is only one game behind Jacksonville for the 2nd wild card spot. Jacksonville's last 7 games could go 6-1, or 5-2 for a win total of 11 or 12. Don't count on the jags to go 4-3 on that schedule.

10 wins usually gets a wildcard birth, but this year it looks like 10 wins puts a team in a tie-breaker, at best. I'm sure 2nd place in the AFC North (Cincy or Pitt) will have at least 11 wins and the Jags could reach it too.

Riggo,

I don't expect any of those 4 games to be easy but I do think the Bolts can, and probably should win all 4. I agree with your assesment of the AFC playoff picture, 10 wins aint gonna be enough for somebody. Spot on.

Well it's half way in the Bolts mini-season, two wins out of two, still not in a wildcard spot, but if we keep on winning things should take care of themselves.

I was delighted with the OT win in Washington because it was a game the Bolts would've lost earlier in the season. Maybe Marty was right when he said last year that teams have to "learn" how to win games. Anyway, looking forwards, the next two are home games against the Faiders and Fish, frankly two that should be won to bring an end to this part of the season, and then we have what I feel is yet another "mini-season", two tough road games in Indi and KC, and lastly the Donks at the Jack.

I just hope that prior to those last three games, we've put ourselves in a position to grab a play-off spot, i.e. NO GOOF UPS!.

Sorry for the self indulgent post, but I don't want this thread to die horribly, and yes this is as much of a BUMP! as anything else. ;D

Glad you bumped this up, the AFC wild card race is very interesting and the chargers managed to beat washington at washington, very exciting game. I think they will the next two games.

Above I pointed out the dire situation SD was facing with Jax having such an easy schedule compared the brutal road for the chargers. With the loss of Leftwich the Jags schedule seems a little tougher now.

Now that the Skins game is done I will root for Marty and Co. I have not seen them on TV this year at all.

Re:San Diego Super-Chargers Thread

When this post was started it was how to catch the Jags for 2nd wild card spot. Now the Jags seem to have a lock on the 1st wildcard and SD need help from Pittsburgh as Pittburgh holds the head to head advantage over SD.

Pittsburgh gets cleveland and detroit
SD gets KC and Denver.

It's looking bleak for Coach Schottenheimer.

Re:San Diego Super-Chargers Thread

One thing that gives me hope. The Steelers must win out and they aren't particularly consistent last few weeks.
Also if we can beat the Chiefs, (and the Broncos do the unlikely and lose to the Raiders) we take the division if we can beat them the final week at home.
Its a big ask and in all honesty though I don't expect us to hit the postseason.

I can't see the Chargers making the playoffs ... which is a real shame, with their schedule it was always going to be tough, and the fact they have been thrown all over America seems to have resulted in inconsistent play from in my mind one of the best three teams in the NFL.

Anyways ... next year ... i can only see them getting better presuming they have the room to keep a lot of their players. Maybe upgrade the CB/ WR position and draft some O-Line prospects. That front seven in the defence looks very nice to me (and i can confirm if i was quarterbacking against them I would soil my pants such would be my fear)

I like the Chargers and I like Marty-ball. But the key loss was the home game against Miami late in the season when they had every motivation possible. All year long the chargers were highly placed in the various Rankings, but losing late to weaker team in that situation is the kiss of death. Hopefully my redskins will avoid a similar fate with their game against the eagles this week.

Oh and the Vikings have taken our director of scouting
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2305418
Quote:

San Diego Chargers director of pro scouting Fran Foley has agreed in principle to become the new director of player personnel for the Minnesota Vikings, and a deal is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

Foley would become the third "point" in what new Vikings owner Zygi Wilf has described as a "triangle of authority" in the franchise's revamped football operation. In the front office model described by Wilf last week, vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski and the club's personnel director will work with new head coach Brad Childress in a committee approach.

The highly respected Brzezinski signed a three-year contract extension during the final weekend of the regular season. Childress, former offensive coordinator for the Eagles, was hired two weeks ago to replace the deposed Mike Tice. Wilf has been clear for some time about the need to hire a top personnel executive.

After the Vikings interviewed at least seven candidates, Foley was offered the job earlier this week. The two sides are working toward finalizing his contract.

Foley, 44, joined the Chargers' scouting staff in 2003 after spending the previous nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. A former college coach, Foley was hired in 1994 as assistant director of pro personnel, and then promoted in 1998 to the position of director of pro scouting.

The addition of Foley, when it becomes official, further strengthens a front office that Wilf has worked hard to bolster since purchasing the Vikings last spring. Under former owner Red McCombs, the Vikings had one of the league's smallest support staffs.

Re:San Diego Super-Chargers Thread

You're right that theres not many of us.

Have you heard we are interviewing John Ramsdell to replace Brian Schottenheimer as QB coach (who went to the Jets as OC). Ramsdell spent the last 8 years with the Rams and helped develop Trent Green, Kurt Warner and Mark Bulger. A great signing if we get him.

Another rumour is that one of the QBs may be heading to NY.
http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/9201384

Quote:

KIDDY CORNER

Jets head coach Eric Mangini and his offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, are a combined 67 years old -- two years older than Washington head coach Joe Gibbs.

And some of that youthful enthusiasm could manifest itself in the Jets' pursuit of a quarterback.

San Diego QB Philip Rivers could be on the Jets' radar screen.
Schotteneheimer worked closely in San Diego with Chargers quarterbacks Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. The Jets need a quarterback, and have the draft's fourth overall pick as ammunition -- the exact spot in which Rivers was selected.

If anybody knows a scouting report on San Diego's quarterbacks, it's Schottenheimer. San Diego would prefer not to trade either, but if it had to part with one, the Chargers might prefer to deal Brees.

New York's problem might not be what it can give up in return. It might be squeezing the quarterback under its salary cap. The Jets are in a rough salary-cap position, and some veterans are expecting to be released. Some moves are going to have to be made.

But it will be up to Mangini and Schottenehimer to prove that they are wiser than their years as they try to return the Jets to the playoffs.

My knowledge of the Chargers ... Godfrey, he's your number two MLB in that 3-4 right? Do you look to the draft, or to free agency to fill the hole? I had a look at the free agents list and no-one really sprung out.

Dave_R 06.02.2006 04:38 PM

Re:San Diego Super-Chargers Thread

Yeah Godfrey plays one of the starting inside spots. We have Wilhelm and Cooper who can fill in in spots but I'd much rather see us pickup a more established player. Looking at the free agents list theres not much that stands out but our GM seems to have a knack for finding players who fit the system. they may even try resigning Leber and moving him inside

Dave_R 11.02.2006 05:35 PM

Re:San Diego Super-Chargers Thread

Godfrey's back!!!! ;D

Apparently seeing the Bus at the SuperBowl stirred some feelings and seeing as the chargers have the potential to be a SuperBowl team next year the desire was to strong for him to return.

Also Jacques Cesaire (DE) who lost his job to Castillo last year has resigned for 5 years. A pretty good backup.

And the team has submitted a long term offer to Brees, who knows where this goes from here though.

The San Diego Chargers select cornerback Antonio Cromartie with the 19th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Cromartie is a very good athlete, with the rare addition of excellent size to go with it. He has the quickness, hips, acceleration and playing speed to stay with receivers all over the field in tight man-to-man coverage, and he can use his long arms well to break up passes. When he backpedals with bent knees, he can plant, drive and close fast on passes in front of him. He has the hands to cut in front of the receiver to make the tough interception. He has the size and strength to physically dominate receivers in press coverage -- he can slow releases and can push receivers off their routes down the field.

I have a slight soft spot for the Chargers, back in 1987 after the strike games they gave my local britball team (Thames Valley Chargers) all their kits and shipped them over.

Also met former Chargers great LB Billy Ray Smith at one of the TV Chargers games , top top bloke.

Brady is Ryan's brother, and as Ed says, he plays for Oregon. Might well get the start for them next year, but I prefered Dennis Dixon last year. Oakland man, y'see! :D

PSJ - you can't blame Doltman for hating the Raiders. Oakland's AFL franchise was awarded to give poor San Diego a rival. Sadly the Dolts couldn't keep up with us, and (like the rest of the AFC West) we treat them like an also-ran. Looking forward to our home opener this year. Jeez, this has got to be the deadest Division thread on the boards! :(

Anyway, Raiders fans, you may care to note that my prejudiced rant at the Raider fan stereotype was followed by a safety-wink ;).
No offence meant, (I figure due to law of averages there's bound to be a few Raider fans out there who can use words of more than 3 or 4 letters ;)). Again, please note the use of safety-wink.

Yeah, opening night's gonna be interesting, and while I have doubts about Rivers and our lines' ability to keep him out of hospital, Aaron Brooks can't be relishing the prospect of our front seven either.
