Idaho and New Mexico State have effectively been booted out of the Sun Belt after the 2016 season. They're clearly the two biggest losers of re-alignment with the WAC disappearing. There doesn't seem to be anywhere for them to go if the Sun Belt doesn't want them. Rumours are that Idaho will join the Big Sky in the FCS which will make them the first to drop down a division since we began referring to them as FBS/FCS. Not sure about NMSU but they aren't anywhere near a strong enough draw to stay independent for long. The Mountain West has already said that both schools should move on to Plan B now which Im guessing means they applied to join and we're rejected.

Elsewhere, under the radar, UMass is now independent ending its four year run in the MAC. They had some pretty horrendous seasons but have a decent schedule coming up in 2016 including three SEC opponents (by decent I mean lots of teams who'll probably beat them). The UMass AD is adamant that conference realignment is coming once the Big XII decides which two teams to admit from the Group of Five and that they'll find a new conference as some mid-majors starting moving around. But given their location I'm not sure who would take them if not the MAC as I doubt the AAC would see much appeal in adding them and they're still quite a distance from even the more Northerly members of C-USA like Marshall.
Didn't realise they could get booted unless something big like the Penn State thing happened.

I guess they are contracted and in most cases a school offers enough to a conference that they just continue to be renewed. Obviously not the case with Idaho and NMSU as they were football only members who are two of the worst FBS teams in the country.

That sucks I don't like it, if it was the Big 10 booting Illinois or Purdue for NDSU I could just about take it but this just doesn't seem right.

I agree, if you booted Rutgers from the Big Ten then obviously it wouldn't be great for them but they'd be welcomed with open arms by the MAC or even AAC.

With NMSU or Idaho you're effectively forcing them out of the FBS in the long term as I doubt they'd survive being an independent for longer than 5 years.

So Idaho are out of the FBS, moving to the Big Sky conference, the era of expansion is over.

Well it looks like the Big 12 are going to expand after all.

Imagine they'll take the UMass approach of wait and see what happens with conference realignment. The MWC might reconsider if they lose a couple of teams in a few years.

I think Cincy are nailed on to be one team but unsure who the other would be.

Maybe an up and coming school - UTSA springs to mind...
