Default What's the stupidest play you've ever seen in the NFL?

Ok, here's my candidate, taken from the Cleveland v's Jacksonville game the other night.

Cleveland is trailing 20-14, 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, has 4th & 21 on the JAX 29 yard line. Cleveland lines up in the field-goal formation and has the kicker punt, the ball goes out of bounds at the Jax 7 yard line. Jax then goes 3 and out, punts, and Cleveland gets the ball back at their own 42, 29 yards backwards of where they had a fourth down!.

OK, I believe there is a time and a place for a "surprise" punt, I even remember Randall Cunningham punting from the shotgun on 3rd down, but I just don't get this call at all. They are behind in the game, a fieldgoal makes it a 3 point deficit, a heave at the end-zone gives them the chance of taking the lead. Why line up in the field-goal formation?. To make sure there's no deep guy?. YOU DON'T PUNT TO THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD FROM THE OPP 29yd line anyway!.

Wait a minute........., does anybody know if this was a bobbled snap? :-[

I didn't see the one you are talking about but I did see a college game once where the player forced a fumble picked it up and ran the wrong way for a safety rather than a TD. Haha. ;D

Like Jim Marshall's wrong way run for the Vikings in the 1970's.

Aaron Brooks could probably compile a top 5 of his own that would beat most all-time top 5s.

Yep, the play I mention was vs the Raiders, later that year he tried a repeat of the play vs Denver.

id suggest two - the Leon Lett game-deciding play from the Cowboys/Dolphins Thanksgiving day game.....

and for parity - the Joe Theismann shank-punt ;D

Both completely stupid!

I remember when Mark Rypien was the Redskins QB, early in his career, he had a fumble problem and there was a game against the Bears where he was juggling the ball behind his back for about 4 or 5 steps. it wasn't funny at the time but the Skins won the game and it's good to laugh at it now.

Also, anyone remember Clay Matthews infamous lateral vs the Oilers from about '88?
