Thanks a lot for this. Really helpful. Out of interest, how dangerous/safe is it walking around? I've heard a lot of bad things but you never know how accurate it is. For context, I live in London so I'm used to cities, and have been to the US about 8 times to various cities and generally have found it less safe than here in the UK but nothing to worry about as long as you are careful/sensible. And obviously on game day it's usually so busy that there's no need to worry about safety... tends to be the deserted places where trouble can find you. Generally I don't find US downtowns very safe at night, I have to say, precisely because they empty out after the end of the work day and it tends to just be those with nowhere else to go who are left.

If you read my edit above sounds like this has been worked on and I would say it's sounding even more like it would be safe to walk around all of Downtown up to Midtown where as in the past it was okay in downtown and Midtown but no so much in between the two. I went annually for 10 years and Detroit is/was differnt to like other cities as in downtown is very small and due to the Casinos has a lot of people visting 24hrs a day but just right in the heart of down town so I woud say in the loop of that people mover with a cinema in the Renenaince Centre on the water front and Greektown - an area with resturants, bars and huge 24 hour Greektown Casino - due to the wealth of buisness peeps from the suburbs frequenting these establishments can say in all of downtown your pretty safe walking about as its policed - they wanna keep the money coming in so don't want patrons being robbed etc. Rule of thumb always used to be ya fine on foot if you stay downtown but it has 2 natural borders - The Detroit river - other side of which is Windsor Canada - and I75 (Intersate 75) Detroits interstate highways are sunken to allow local traffic and roads to go over them so basically I was always told if ya walking and come across a bridge over a highway turn around and go back as that was kind of the border of downtown - after which it was run down and bad neighbourhoods started like the Cass Corridor and police presence was greatly reduced as no longer considered downtown so to speak. After having an issue on my first ever visit to the city exploring by foot in 2001 and going the wrong way into wasteland on Woodward crossing over a highway (I75) after that I was then told by a local working the desk in the hotel I stayed at 'only cross them borders in a cab or bus and your be fine' - so these days add in to that equation ya own vechile and that new Woodward Tram thats been created' and your be fine as in over a decade since sticking to that rule of thumb day or night I have never had another problem. Now it's probbaly okay over them highways as thats the area that sounds like since I was there has been regenereated linking downtown to midtown (a few miles).

So in my opnion downtown sir you will be fine day or night even if it seems a bit quiet walking between places - as all Americans seem to drive to downtown for nightlife from the suburbs so when one of the big sports teams is not playing yes downtown can seem pretty quiet on the streets / sidewaks as everywhere there's car parks - so with the exception of Greektown on that one main street which has establishments open 24/7 due to the casion being open 24/7 it can seem quite but places that are open are not - just look at the car parks. However it's all safe and indoor establishments all will be pretty lively, places such as Coachs Corner, The Town Pump, The Park Bar, Hockey Town Cafe etc., Plaka's all night cafe in Greek Town - all walkable from Ford Field in different directions and all those except Plakas are in other areas (not Greektown).

So have no worries European Bob.

Video from 2015 I found on downtown Detroit give you an idea of layout will look for a better one when I have time and change link:
