It seems that S Shawn Wooden will be retiring this offseason due to a back injury, and the coaching staff are keen to play Tony Bua at safety instead of LB. Coach Saban see's Bua as a Adam Archuleta type safety.

Bua is a tweener and he will probably suit the safety role better. He will bring playmaking ability to an impotent safety position and will add fire to the defense. I cant wait !!!!!

The Phins have released 4 players today. QB Jay Fiedler, FS Arturo Freeman, SS Shawn Wooden and DE JayWilliams have been released in a move that will free up vital cap space.

Fiedler's release was expected since late last season because of his 2005 cap number of $6.35 million and his status as a starter having ended with the emergence of A.J. Feeley.

Safety Shawn Wooden was released and is expected to retire because of a back injury.

The Phins are also going to guarantee a $5 million roster bonus to wide receiver Chris Chambers which will lower his cap number from $7.35 million to $3.35 million.

These roster moves will clear about $15.9 million in cap space.

More room can be made depending on what the Dolphins do with four others who may be expendable -- wide receiver David Boston ($3.16 million cap figure), left tackle Damion McIntosh ($2.4 million), defensive tackle Tim Bowens ($1.22 million) and fullback Rob Konrad ($800,000).

The Dolphins could clear enough cap room to keep cornerback Patrick Surtain on their roster at the start of next Wednesday's free-agent signing period despite his $8.4 million cap figure. So it looks like Patrick will stay as a Dolphin which is great news for this Dolfan.

Check out the front page of NFL.com today, there's a great interview with Nick Saban. Check the link under NFL Network (you don't need to be a subscriber).

Doesn't give away much regarding the draft though!

Also it doesn't look like the cap savings this week will save Patrick Surtain from being traded. Chiefs are looking most keen, and a first is looking unlikely too...

If there's that much interest in him, surely we can get a low first off someone for him? Indy?

The Dolphins added potential starters at defensive end and safety Friday and moved closer to a restructured contract with linebacker Junior Seau.

Ex-Kansas City defensive end Vonnie Holliday agreed to terms on a two-year contract, and safety Travares Tillman was signed to a two-year deal.

The Dolphins are scheduled to meet the following free agents next week : QB Gus Frerotte, LB Anthony Simmons, CB Mario Edwards, LB Matt Stewart, LB Donnie Spragan, S Kenoy Kennedy, RB Ron Dayne.

It seems that the Vikings and the Seahawks are now the leading contenders for Pat Surtain with 2nd round draft picks looking like possible compensation.

And Morlon Greenwood's gone - signed for the Texans. Solid player, but I don't think a massive loss with the youth we have at LB (Moore, Ayanbadejo, Bua etc)

NEW Dolphins sign DE Carter, waive Boston
The Dolphins signed former Titans defensive end Kevin Carter, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, to a five-year contract on Monday. The team also released enigmatic wide receiver David Boston because he failed a physical. Terms of Carter's deal were not disclosed, but ESPN.com reported that is worth $30 million, including an $8 million signing bonus.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to add someone of Kevin's caliber to our defense," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "Kevin has been a quality player who has contributed to winning teams in both St. Louis and Tennessee, including a Super Bowl championship with the Rams. In addition, he has been a positive influence in the locker room throughout his career, and we're looking for him to add to our veteran leadership with the Dolphins."

Carter, a 10-year NFL veteran who has never missed a game, is the second defensive lineman signed by the Dolphins in free agency. The team added free agent Vonnie Holliday on Saturday.

Boston was reinstated to the Dolphins' roster last month after officially serving a suspension for testing positive under the NFL's steroid and performance-enhancing substance policy. Boston was suspended for the final four games of last season but was ineligible to play anyway because he was on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Carter, who earned trips to the Pro Bowl following the 1999 and 2002 seasons, placed the Dolphins atop his wish list after recently being released by Tennessee in a salary-cap move.
