What's wrong with having Rattay as you're backup, sure he ain't the greatest QB in the world but he is a decent enough QB to do the job as #2 :-\

Yup, i feel sorry for Rattay. He isn't exactly Pro-Bowl calibre but he's a solid enough backup. Now he's going to be denoted to 3rd string.
He was going to be 3rd string anyway. When McCown comes back he'll probably be 4th string.

Fielder is a decent enough signing for the Bucs but they must have very little faith in Rattay.

Buccaneers | Fiedler won't be ready for training camp
Thu, 29 Jun 2006 17:57:33 -0700

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jay Fiedler (shoulder) is now about 85-90 percent recovered from last season's shoulder surgery, but he will be unable to be a full-time training camp participant right away. Fiedler will have to beat out QB Tim Rattay to be QB Chris Simms' backup.
So, Fiedler wasn't signed to slot straight in at back-up but to compete with Rattay (and Bruce Gradkowski ;D) for 2nd string.

So really all Fielder has been signed for is to get Rattay & Gradkowski to work their ***** off then? (Like we've done with Ragone at third string)

Most probably. I hope it will have a positive affect on Bruce Gradkowski as some people have said he could become a starter in the NFL and it sounds as though Gruden is impressed by him.

You guys should really have kept hold of Griese.
Simms was always going to be starter and by the time he did become starter (in his 3rd season), there was no point in him competing with a 31 year old to start any longer.

Plus we needed to free up some cap space somewhere in order to keep people like Brooks. Gruden obviously believes that Simms is no worse at QB than Griese,if not better.
