I thought from Richmond it was just tubes back but is there an option for trains as well??
Richmond is on the same train line as Twickenham from Waterloo just further out of London. So best for KX is train to Vauxhall then Victoria line underground.

The line I was referencing is branded London overground. It's different from the main line and appears on the tube map in Orange and white. I don't think its particularly good for Kings X but has a couple of handy interchanges across north London.

I was traveling the other way out from London and got to the station around 10 there was still a large queue of people trying to get into the station heading into London.

I managed to get straight on the train after about 2 minutes wait, i think there were some that got onto the 1st train heading away got off then got on the next train heading towards to miss the queues.
