No surgery for Romo. Expected 8 week lay off.

The Cowboys are due to work out Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson (who?!).

No harm in having a look at them. They might turn out to be better back ups for Weeden than what we already have.

Default Cowboys QB's

While Romo's out the cowboys should look to stock up RB/FB's use their OL strength and pound the ball more. You only need Weedon or Kellen Moore to hand off or short/medium pass to move the chains.
Kinda reinvent the wheel old fashioned football)
Focus on running the ball should help stand in QB's.
Theres a few still on free agency

Not convinced Flynn or Ponder can help?

To be honest I'd sooner leave the FB off the field. We haven't got RB's who will bulldoze their way through half gaps and break tackles. We need to spread out defences, match our O line, RB, and play calling up against 6 or 7 defenders. Having the FB in just takes up space sometimes, space that the likes of Randle need. I agree though, running the football helps the QB (and the defence).

The workouts are to find a back up, not a starter.

Matt Cassel. Didn't see that coming, especially via a trade.

Cassel spent most of the off season as part of Buffalo's muddled QB situation. It doesn't fill you with confidence to think he lost out to EJ Manual and Tyrod Taylor in the race for the starting job there.

I can see the idea behind bringing in a veteran presence, especially on a team as competitive as this. You have to hope he's a smart guy (you'd expect he is) who can come in and hit to ground running, pick up the playbook, challenge/push Weeden for the start, and at worst be an upgrade over Kellen Moore.

Looking longer term, Cassel is only 33, so he could be in the running for the back up job down the line if he beats out Weeden by the time Romo returns.

If Weeden, Cassel and Kellen Moore get injured then you might be in business.

Witten seems to have overcome 2 sprained ankles and a sprained knee to practice this week. The man is a machine!

“It’s all good,’’ he said, despite being covered in tape. “I’ve just gotta work the swelling out. I’ll be fine.’’

Witten kinda reminds me of Mark Bavaro played with dodgy knees and broken jaw etc.
