FYI Ajit Pai was appointed to the FCC by Obama who had been recommended(picked) by Mitch McConnell so think he was already on the committee before Trump became POTUS.

maybe MP's will stop with this we have to go on social media to debate with the general public,no twitter and facebook is not the forum for that unless you just want to be abused and can then become a victim.

I'm pretty sure the response to MP's receiving death threats shouldn't be 'Well stay off twitter, then"

Sure, but he didn't run it.

Shortly after taking office, Trump designated him as the Chairman. He then recommended him for another 5 year term - as Chairman.

It's not just social media, email too. Do people send letters any more? Perhaps not. I guess it is easier to bash out an email in a rage.

Death threats seem pretty "hateful" to me. Suggesting she should be hanged, that her head belongs on a spike, that she should be hung, drawn and quartered, mixing it up with a Jo Cox hashtag..

..did Brexiteer MP's get any of this hatred from Remainers, I wonder? Even after the referendum vote went against them?

Or is it only the Leave camp that has all these angry psychos in it? Frothing at the mouth over treason and medieval punishments.

All harmless banter, I suppose. It's not as if any MP's have actually been violently murdered by frothy mouthed Leavers. Oh, wait..

so he was NOT an "industry stooge" hand picked by Trump only one of the 2 Repbulicans already on the committee when Trump won and one of them was going to be promoted to run it.

guess if he was so bad Obama could have refused to appoint him.

pretty sure Soubry should look at Katie Hopkins,if you are going to be controversial on hot button topics and put yourself on social media you are asking for the keyboard warriors to start the trolling.

atleast these people haven't gone as far as leaving a coffin outside an MP's office which received far less press in certain media.

Seriously? You think 'stay off twitter' is the lesson here? Was Jo Cox on twitter when she was shot and killed in the street on her way out of MP's surgery in her constituency? Should twitter be the preserve of Donald Trump, or Jacob Rees-Mogg? They are both prominent on twitter and perhaps think more in line with you. Maybe that's what we need on social media, more people who think like you. And fewer who don't.

There is a huge difference between disagreeing with an opinion and threatening to kill someone or other horrific things. That kind of thing goes on on twitter. And mainstream media like the Mail are to blame for stoking hatred against politicians exercising their democratic duty. They need to understand that their articles have consequences. You cannot say "oh but nobody would actually harm an MP", because last year one was murdered by a right wing extremist.

This is nothing new. In 1960s West Germany, the student movement protested against the government, much to the anger of Axel Springer's Bild Zeitung. He was the Rupert Murdoch of his day, or the paper was (in many ways still is) the Sun or the Daily Mail of its day: right wing, fearful of socialism, read by the elderly, and by mostly uneducated socially conservative types who distrusted left-wing, educated, younger types. The paper printed hateful article after hateful article about the student protest movement, and about the student leaders of it, whipping up fear and anger among its impressionable readers. And then, in 1968, the leader of the student movement, Rudy Dutschke, was shot in the head while he was in the street. By a reader of Bild Zeitung who told the court that he did it out of hate because Dutschke was "a dirty communist pig".

These articles have consequences. And the papers know it and indeed don't shy away from it when it works for then: "It was the Sun wot won it", after all.

You just encapsulated one of the biggest failures of the American system there. It's not really a left:right thing either.

Why does an independent state agency like the FCC have board members that are destined to run it because they are "Republican"? Or Democrat, for that matter.

Industry stooge might have been a bit harsh, but when he decides he is done with the FCC, you don't need a magic ball to predict a cosy job with a broadcaster will be around the corner.

That destiny, incidentally, is not solely a failing of the American system. It is far too prevalent here as well.
