On a side note, you would think the changing area would be a bit fancier.

Restructured deal will allow Winslow to recoup lost wages
Sunday, July 31, 2005

Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has lost out on about $2.3 million over the past two weeks because of his motorcycle accident, but the Browns are working on restructuring his deal so that he can make most of it back.

On July 15, the Browns withheld $2 million in signing bonus money. On Friday, they placed Winslow on the non-football injury list, which cost him his 2005 salary of $305,000.

The Browns did not go after any of the $6 million Winslow had earned before the May 1 accident and have made him a proposal that will enable him to earn back the money he loses through performance incentives, such as number of touchdown catches.

Browns owner Randy Lerner said discussions between the Browns and Winslow's family and agent, Kevin Poston, are ongoing.

"You want a football player that's motivated and wants to earn what he had in mind and there are ways to do that," said Lerner. "You can do it through incentives or by extending the contract. I think the new proposal defends the Browns and its rights but also offers up the opportunity for the player to [make back the money]. It's not us laying down."

Lerner said the decision to withhold the bonus and salary but not go after any of the $6 million was based on General Manager Phil Savage's assessment that Winslow will still be valuable when he recovers next season from surgery to repair his right anterior cruciate ligament.

"I think the philosophy is that Phil feels he's a player that can contribute," said Lerner. "[It's] our sense that he's going to be an important part of our team. We've had a lot of meetings and the goal is to try and avoid causing a problem and [still] give him the opportunity to make a difference for the team."

Lerner said Winslow and his family have been "very direct, very communicative and we're working through it. The conversations have been productive."

Winslow is due another $950,000 bonus on Dec. 15 and a $2.41 million option bonus on July 15, 2006. But those bonuses would most likely change with the restructuring. His base salaries through 2009 are as follows: $542,500 in 2006, $780,000 in 2007, $1.017 million in 2008 and $1.255 million in 2009.

Winslow also lost out on more than $10 million in incentives because of his broken right fibula last season, but Lerner said he didn't think Winslow would be able to recoup any of that money under the current proposal. Originally, he was signed to a six-year deal worth up to $40 million. But because of the broken fibula, the highest he could've earned was $29.4 million.

Lerner said he's been told by the medical staff that Winslow can still be "a superb football player. He's young, he heals well, he has a good shot at it."

He also said he viewed Winslow's accident as "a mistake that can be understood without getting into heavy character flaws." He said Winslow is more driven and focused as a result of the accident.

Winslow has not yet made an appearance at training camp, but Lerner said he's at the facility working hard every day.
Browns really have let Kellen Winslow off the hook on this one havent they. If they keep doing this he will get the Feeling he can do whatever he wants with minimal consequences. If he doesnt already think this

Sure thats the main thing, but he has proven he doesn't care for authority and rules much, surely rolling over and letting him basicaly get away with what he has done isnt a good way to make a point. Surely enough of this pampering guys went on with the last regime, If i was a browns fan i would want to see him made an example of.

The problem is you don't want to alienate the one "superstar"(potentially) that the franchis has.
