Sam Bradford has a $312k 46 man game day roster bonus each game so if the Cardinals don't dress him now he is not the starter they can save a lot.

Kaepernick isn’t really a fit for the vast majority of teams which seems to go unnoticed amid all the hoopla and controversy. The 49ers are also giving a tryout to Tom Savage.

This was probably Bradford’s last roll of the dice as a starter. He’s now entering journeyman status going forward, but he’s made a ton of money in his career. I think he was the last of the first overall picks to earn those huge rookie contracts before the new CBA.

wonder if the 49ers might trade for him.

still think Bradford will be starting somewhere next September if the money is right for player/team.

What are you gaining by trading for a QB now though?

1-2 in a division you aren't going to win. It's defeatist to give up so early in the season but you are missing your franchise QB and RB at this point. Sherman is hobbled too. Is 7-9 making the play offs? Even if they do, they aren't contenders.

Ok, maybe you use a 5th or 6th rounder on a guy like Bradford to upgrade your long term back up, but tbh they might as well see what they have in Bethard.

It's a bad way to think, but that's the reality of losing key players imo. It's all or nothing in the NFL.

For starters, as divisional rivals I don’t think the Cards and 49ers would trade with each other. Arizona have already paid $11m in sunk costs to Bradford so what’s another $4m to keep him as a backup and insurance in case Rosen gets hurt or faceplants. They can then move on next year with $5m dead money, but save the $20m in cash he’s due in 2019.

If I’m the 49ers I might look instead to Cleveland and Tyrod Taylor. The Browns are carrying 3 QBs on their roster and if Taylor gets traded then Drew Stanton would serve as Baker Mayfield’s backup. The reality is though that the 49ers season is over regardless of who plays QB for the next 13 weeks so GM John Lynch might be reluctant to trade future draft capital in what will go down as a lost season.
