Default Do you speak NFL English?

Brits and Americans both speak English, but ever noticed how the sports lexicon for the NFL and American sports is sometimes quite different from what we would say over here? A shirt is what you wear to work; a pitch is a throw in baseball; a match is that thing you strike to light a candle.

So here's NFLUK's own mini-dictionary of American-English sports translations. Feel free to add your own below.

English terms in bold and what the Americans would say instead afterwards

Away, away game - on the road, road game

Boots - cleats

Car park - parking lot

Club - team, franchise, organization

Conversion (kick) - PAT, point after try, try

Draw - tie

Dressing room - locker room

Extra time - overtime

Fixtures - schedule (pronounced sk-edule not sh-edule)

Ground - stadium, building

(away) kit- (road) uniform

Match - game

Pitch - field

Sending off - ejection

Sent off - ejected, tossed

Shirt - jersey

Squad - roster

Touchline - sideline

Training - practice

Training ground - practice facility

I've often wondered why our friends across the pond pronounce it dee-fense. It seems to be just sports related too, they don't have a Secretary of State for Dee-fense. But then they have de-fense-ive ends and tackles rather than dee-fensive ends. I suppose the DEE-FENSE chant wouldn't quite have the same effect if they pronounced it properly. Weirdos

I might be wrong, but don't they sometimes call offsideS rather than offside?

I don't even know what we call it, but color commentator is another American term not used here.

Route - route, but pronounced 'rout'

Most successful - winningest

Transfer - trade*

Transfer moves - roster transactions

Player earns £x per week - Player earns $x per year ^

* Not strictly identical but as close as you will get

^ Side point but we seem to be the only ones to refer to sports people's (especially footballers') pay in weekly terms. Even in soccer, everyone else talks in months or years.
