After a 162 game season there is now a one off wild card match? This is ridiculous.

I was planning to bet on the Rangers for the playoffs but not with them in this position.

£20 on the Yankees.

I think the one off wildcard match is a good move by MLB. It restores something of a competitive advantage to the division winners as the wildcard teams will likely use their best pitcher in the wildcard game and so will not available to pitch until later in a divisional series.

They already had/have an advantage by playing more games at home.

True, and it may not make much of a difference in the end. But you did have teams in previous years who were safely in the wild card spot not having to worry about their rotation for the start of the playoffs...which they do now as they could be out after one game so have to put their best pitcher in for that one-off game.

The format has changed in that the wildcard team winner plays their first two games at home as well in the series as does the lower seed in the other divisional matchup...so will be interesting to see what kind of impact that has.

Good riddance Bobby V. It was a thankless task you had but you were never the right man for the job.

Sacking Bobby V alone won't be enough to put the Red Sox back on track though. There are still issues at both the ownership level and in the clubhouse that need to be tackled. Getting rid of Bobby V is definitely a step in the right direction though. This season has been an embarrassment for the Red Sox.

I knew they would rue the day they parted company with Terry Francona. That man was the best thing to happen to the Red Sox in a long time.
