Classy work Danny S, classy.
the Redskins have manage to mess up the whole Cousins contract situation, they have lost a lot of leverage on a what kind of long term deal they can offer him as his 2017 Tag is around $24m and 2018 would be a mind blowing $34m.if he gets a long term deal he will probably pass the Andrew Luck deal and could command $75m fully guaranteed in the 1st 3 years.

I fail to see how Washington have lost any leverage. They'd be happy to pay Cousins a one year 24m deal, since in 2017 given the contracts elsewhere and how well he played last year, 24m seems a fair deal.

34m next year is slightly different, but is not only next year, tempered against an ever rising cap, and also by then 34m for the one year still might seem ok value given other QB contracts that get signed in the mean time.

The onus, and therefore lack of leverage, is very much on Cousins.

On what planet would a long term Kirk Cousins contract pass Andrew Luck's deal? That would be literally the worst contract ever given to any NFL player ever

The GM is playing it exactly right, Cousins needs to prove he can carry the team. He didn't prove that this year, he was fine but as soon as things went even slightly wrong he crumbled like a stack of cards. They shouldn't be giving him a long term deal, the GM is correct and it's madness that essentially the head coach and owner's lackey are teaming up against him when it's not their job!

Cousins has leverage in the sense that he appears to be a 'franchise QB'. The Redskins, as others have pointed out, would probably be OK tagging him this year but the long term price will only go up.

They don't appear to have much of a Plan B, so would the Redskins be willing to 'reset' the clock and draft a rookie? Seems like madness tbh. They've got a QB who has had success in their current system, they'll pay him.

The skins could let him test the market and beat the silly price... getting it right is what being a good GM is about lol.

you are right that the Redskins can just keep play Tag and pay Cousins $24m this year which would be about 14% of there team cap space for the coming season.

Cousins got paid $19.953m last year with the tag which was the highest base salary ahead of Big Ben who earned $17.7m,this year with the 2nd tag his $24m base salary would be $6m dollars more than the next highest salary at the moment which is Ryan Tannehill at $17.9m.

if the Redskins want to keep paying Kirk on a year to year deal they are going to make Kirk very rich will hand-cuffing themselves with cap room to re-sign there own guys and maybe bring in high priced free agents.

if you look at the long term deals Wilson and Luck signed they have the 19th/14th highest cap hits in 2017,Cousins with the tag would have the 3rd highest behind Romo/Palmer.

the Redskins are over paying Kirk now compared to other young QB's while supposedly trying to decide if he is there long term future but if they find out during this season he is the answer then they are going to have to over pay on his long term deal because if not then with a $34m cap hit coming next year he could easily find himself as a 29 year old franchise QB who finds himself as an un-restricted free agent next summer.

Reports are now Alberts is not getting released and the Dolphins are trying to trade him.

Mario Williams also informed that he will be released.
