I can only think of one season off the top of my head in the last 10-12 years when the Steelers and Patriots have met in the playoffs.

well don't forget how the regular season losses have also impacted seedings in the play-offs and tie breakers.

But what does that matter if in the end we get knocked out by someone else? You said 'normally run into a better Patriots team'. The reality is every team other than the Super Bowl winner runs into a team that knocks them out. But in the Steelers' case, that team is usually not the Patriots. The Steelers played the Patriots in the postseason 2016 AFC title game. And lost, granted. Before that was all the way back in the 2004 season - the Steelers made 3 Super Bowls in the meantime. The Jags and Broncos knocked Pittsburgh out more than the Patriots in that time, plus there were 5 seasons of not making the playoffs. And I don't think you can credit the Patriots for that - ultimately it's one game, or no games. And of the 5 seasons not making the playoffs, the Steelers actually only played the Patriots in 1 of them - 2013!

Not sure if it's reporters making rubbish up, or team execs giving them their opinions to manipulate the market. Either way it's just chatter, magnified by the quiet week(s) leading up to the combine.

indeed, one guy decides to make up a big rumour and it spreads and so some feel like its a real story, like the Wilson to the Giants story a lot of fluff.

pretty sure its mostly a people just making stuff up, like papers and football transfers. they might claim a source (or they might be fictional too) but they never checked it out because they liked the sound of the story.
