I just think you have to look at it for what it is. He misses 4 games. That's it at this stage. Are you moving forward thinking it's a wasted pick already? It would be a bit knee jerk (could be correct though) at this stage. If you looked at the D line before this news emerged (which I expect the Front Office knew well in advance of us) and thought it wasn't good enough then you would have invested a high draft pick in it anyway.

If you were more concerned with other positions, back up QB, the Secondary, etc, then just because Gregory gets a 4 game suspension it doesn't mean you rip up your original plans and start over. Best case scenario - Gregory over comes his addictions and develops into the 1st round player they thought he was. Lawrence book ends the other side. Draft a DT to help Crawford inside and you have a young talented D line from left to right.

If Bosa (or any D lineman) is the best player available then pick him, but if you have someone like Ramsey as your BPA and you already had concerns about your secondary, then hope that Gregory learns from this and pick the corner. You have to deal with what you know now, if you start second guessing too much then you'll make mistakes.

(Disclaimer - it all starts up front for me so find me the best front 4 you can!)

Just would be nice to have one of the 3 areas on D settled but its not, D line, unsettled, complicated, Linebackers ok but still not settled, secondary ditto, not to mention QB, RB and reciever.....

That's the NFL for you. It's very hard to fill all the holes in your roster.

The key is finding 'diamonds in the rough' in later rounds of the draft, something the Cowboys have failed to do.

Look at the players on the Cowboys roster that have been drafted outside of the top 100 picks over the last 10 years:

Damien Wilson (4th round - 2015)
Ryan Russell (5th round - 2015)
Mark Nzeocha (7th round - 2015)
Geoff Swaim (7th round - 2015)

Anthony Hitchens (4th round - 2014)
Devin Street (4th round - 2014)
Terrance Mitchell (7th round - 2014)

James Hanna (6th round - 2012)

Orlando Scandrick (5th round - 2008)

Doug Free (4th round 2007)

They've made 54 picks outside the top 100 in the last 9 drafts by my reckoning. 10 are on the roster, and 8 of those are still on rookie contracts. So 2 players from 54 have been good enough for a 2nd contract. 2! I don't know how that compares across the league but I'm guessing some teams have a much better success rate than that.

Obviously those numbers are supplemented by UDFA (undrafted free agents) being added to the roster e.g. Lucky Whitehead etc. or other teams UDFA's e.g. David Irving etc.

Either way, the Cowboys don't do a good job of finding players outside of those premium picks. Good job they've hit more often than not on those 1st rounders lately that's for sure.

This is interesting stuff, as a comparison I looked at the current Superbowl champs, of the last 41 drafts going back to Brannon Marshall outside the top 100, 12 are still on the roster 6 are on rookie or 1 years. A more interesting stat would be how many of the teams last 50 outside the 100 were given full contracts before they had to move on with cap space etc

Jack Conklin was asked who the best pass rusher he has ever faced was, Randy Gregory, this is from a guy who has been up against Bosa among others, makes you wonder what's going on?
