What are 'protected' and 'unprotected' draft picks???
Roughly, if a team’s draft pick is Top 3 protected, they are allowed to keep the draft pick if they finish among the top 3 picks in the lottery. Anything else and the pick would be traded as part of the agreed deal, so it offers some level of protection to the trading team.

If a team exercises its protection for a pick then I think it must send the following year’s pick instead as part of the trade arrangements. Actually, each trade will have different terms, so it might be for example Top 8 protected in 2019, Top 3 protected in 2020 and unprotected in 2021.

the Lakers if the trade doesn't officially go through till late july they will still have over $32m in cap space for free agency and with what they have traded away they are going to need to add some more piece's or 1 super-max type player.

if the trade is pushed through earlier there cap space could drop to as little as $23m.

the pelicans got a great haul for a player with only 1 year left on his deal and now can draft Zion with the #1 then either use the #4 or trade it away for more piece's down the road.

A crazy first few hours of NBA free agency and some eye watering contracts that will make NFL players choke on their corn flakes this morning.

Brooklyn are the major winners signing Kevin Durant, Kylie Irving and DeAndre Jordan.

D’Angelo Russell moves in the opposite direction to Durant in a trade between the Nets and Warriors, who also sign Klay Thompson to a max deal.

Jimmy Butler looks like he’s on his way to Miami via a three team trade, though there was a late night snag involving the Mavericks so the 76ers and Heat may have to find another third team to complete the move.

Al Horford leaves the Celtics for the 76ers and Kemba Walker moves to Boston from Charlotte.

Kawhi Leonard will be the final superstar to decide on his future between the Lakers, Clippers and Raptors.

easy to laugh at the knicks but where they smart in not offering Durant 4 years $160m+ when he might not even play this season and who knows how he will be coming of a serious injury at 30 year old plus.

tbh after KD went down i did lose interest in the deal because of the nature of the injury.

the plan should off been to go get Kawhi and Butler but the lack of ability to sell them the team killed those hopes.

plus trading the Unicorn still feels like an error.

you do wonder how different free agency would have been if they had got they had won the draft lottery.

also seems the Warriors have announced they will retire KD's #35 number,i know he is great but 3 years and its not like they where not a world champs before he arrived.oh well.
