Dowsett. Very impressive.

Some of those earlier guys were turd though, my dad can do a 25 mile TT 8-10 minutes faster than some and he's 52! If I had the cash I would be moving to Barbados and dedicating myself to TTs to ride in the Commonwealth Games. Funnily enough I actually think it's achievable and would be a pretty good buzz!
You'd miss the Scottish weather though!

Can't complain about 3rd given he was 80/1!

Valverde should really adapt to just being a classics and stage hunter.

Great race I thought. There always seemed to be one attack or another happening. It is definitely a course that favours the stronger riders now and I wonder if that hill will do for San Sebastián what Villa Vergano did to Lombardia in making it that little bit too difficult for classics riders. Grand tour riders very much on top today (and one for the future in Yates - real shame about the crash). Perhaps that's the answer it being a week after the Tour. That final hill and descent down into town were very entertaining but you wonder whether they might need to rethink what comes before it. I don't know the geography but I wonder if it is possible to have the Jaizkibel closer than 60km from the finish at all. Anyway entertaining race and worthy of being Spain's no1 single day event, did a nice job of showing off the Basque Country too.

Initial riders named for the 2014 Vuelta a España (from cyclingnews)

- Chris Froome, Mikel Nieve (Team Sky)
- Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar)
- Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha)
- Chris Horner (Lampre)
- Cadel Evans, Samuel Sánchez, Philippe Gilbert (BMC)
- Peter Sagan (Cannondale)
- Mark Cavendish, Rigoberto Urán, Tom Boonen, Tony Martin (Omega Pharma QuickStep)
- Thibaut Pinot, Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ)
- Warren Barguill (Giant Shimano)
- Fabio Aru (Astana)
- Dan Martin, Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp)
- Michael Matthews (Orica GreenEdge)
- Fabian Cancellara, Haimar Zubeldia (Trek Factory Racing)
- Laurens Ten Dam, Robert Gesink (Belkin Pro Cycling Team)

The Vuelta is usually the hardest of the three grand tours to predict as you often don't know what sort of form riders are in: can those who rode the Giro well reach the same level twice in a season? Have those who had injuries recovered properly? Can those who rode the Tour below par get to top form in Spain? The one more certain thing is that strong at the Tour in July over 3 weeks rarely translates into strong over 3 weeks at the Vuelta. Valverde looked strong at San Sebastián but I would be surprised to see him contend for the Vuelta GC (this is for Quintana for sure), and likewise Pinot. Even Froome finished 10 minutes off the pace in 2012 behind Contador, Valverde and Rodriguez after being so impressive in that year's Tour.

I wonder why Pinot is even going. Maybe to test if he's matured enough physically to handle two GTs in a season?

I go for 1. Quintana, 2. Froome, 3. Uran

He did it last year, though that was after a disastrous Tour. But I agree, I don't know why he is going. If he is riding I would be much more interested in seeing what Kenny Elissonde can do - yet another promising French climber - or perhaps Jeannesson allowed to ride for himself. They've also got Bouhanni for the sprints - his last FDJ grand tour before moving to Cofidis next year.

Froome is a massive question mark because of the injury but I think I will still pick him to win. 1. Froome, 2. Quintana, 3. Adam Yates (why not - there's always a surprise at the Vuelta and he looked great at San Sebastián).

Purito to take 4th and then grab one of the Worlds or Lombardia afterwards (new Lombardy route coming this year by the way), Uran to totally mail it in.
