Talking New Jets Fan

Hi Everyone,

I've been watching the NFL for a few years now and am a massive fan but just never had a team. This season i decided to pick and stick with a team and that team is the Jets. New York is a great place and one I've always wanted to visit; the green jersey's are unique; great stadium; on the rise IMO and after the cheating last year, i love the way we hate the patriots! I have also bought this seasons jersey with Decker on the back! I'm 21 and from the Wirral (north west) and looking for any advice or information anyone can give. What will happen in terms of the draft, who is leaving or joining? Any advice on how to better follow us from UK. How well you think we will do for the rest of the season, sneak in to the play offs maybe? Who are our other rivals? Where to get the best merchandise from & Any other general information about us! Any UK fan clubs i could join? Sorry for such a long message with lots of questions and thanks for taking the time to reply and helping me out, GO JETS!

Welcome to the forums! Good choice picking the Jets, no-one can accuse you of being a glory hunter..

As things stand, we're currently in possession of the #6 seed in the Playoffs. Unfortunately, it's extremely unlikely that we will stay there, barring an unlikely collapse from Pittsburgh or Kansas City. Still, it's been a promising first season for our new Head Coach, Todd Bowles.

As for rivalries, obviously the main one is with the Patriots with fellow division AFC East sides Miami and Buffalo next. The Dolphins used to be top of the list, but this changed when Bill Belichick backed out of becoming our Head Coach to join the Patriots. Unfortunately, we played a big part in the Patriots long running dominance of the NFL, injuring their then QB Drew Bledsoe and inadvertently unleashing Tom Brady on the league...

New York's "other" team (the Giants) are also obviously rivals, although we only tend to play them once every four years. It's not as big as our divisional rivalries (imo anyway) but it still felt damn good to beat them a few weeks back...

The main question this off-season will be what we do with probably our best player, Mo Wilkerson. He's due a big new contract but, with our Defensive Line the deepest position on our team, we may decide to trade him instead. I hope we find a way to keep him, as there's few (if any) as good as him and he would be a massive loss to our Defense.

In the Draft, we'll likely use a high pick on a pass rushing Outside Linebacker with Offensive Line help another possibility. Quarterback always seems to be a question mark for this team. Ryan Fitzpatrick has done very well this season, after getting an unexpected opportunity when Geno Smith had his jaw broken by a now former teammate. However, he's not a long term solution at his age so we do need to find someone for the future. We drafted Bryce Petty in the last Draft and he has potential, though he's far from a sure thing.

Fitzpatrick will be a Free Agent next season, but we're likely to make re-signing him a priority. Other key players due to hit the market are RBs Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell and NT Damon Harrison. Ivory is one of the best power backs in the league, although he is injury prone, while Powell is a solid backup who is also one of the better pass catching backs around. However, teams in today's NFL are wary of paying big money to RBs, as they have a relatively short shelf life and it is a mainly pass dominated league. Harrison doesn't get as much recognition as our other Defensive Linemen but is every bit as important. I fully expect him to be re-signed.

I'll leave it to others when it comes to merchandise/fan clubs, hope you enjoy the rest of the season!

Thanks for the reply Wayne, an interesting read. Around me and in the family I've got a spread of people who support different teams, my dad supports Cleveland Browns, his mate who we speak to about the NFL supports Washington redskins, my brother in law supports Seattle Seahawks and my brother supports San Francisco 49ers. My brother was telling me, he expects Colin kaepernick to leave them at the end of the season, and with our situation at quarterback as you described it, do you think there is any chance we may take him? Also my dads friends who is the redskins fan went to see them play the jets a few weeks back, he said what a fantastic stadium and atmosphere there was at the MetLife and only had positive things to say!

If we signed Kaepernick, I'd probably throw myself off the nearest bridge! One trick pony who was found out after about a year. He has no future as a starting QB in the NFL. The only guy who would even remotely interest me is Matthew Stafford (Detroit). He's had his ups and downs, but is at least a proven 4000 yard passer who is still relatively young for a QB...

He is a good player Matt Stafford saw him single handedly dismantle the Eagles a few weeks back. My bad on kaepernick I still thought he was decent, had a lot of hype around him a couple of years ago!

Someone will take a chance on him, because of his admittedly freakish athletic ability, but the guy just has too many issues as a passer to be successful imo. Stafford is the best QB who might be available, but he wouldn't come cheap. Wilkerson would probably be part of any trade for him and, as I say, Stafford has had his ups and downs. With the next Draft class at the position again looking weak, we may be best sticking with Fitz for the immediate future.

I still rate Geno Smith, who showed a lot of promise late last season and appeared to be a good fit in the system installed by new Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey, but he's likely played his last game for us.

You said before about Fitzpatrick's age being a problem as to why he couldn't be a long term option, but then you see Brady still doing it at his age and manning still (sort of) doing it even older, are they just a class above still or could Fitzpatrick be the guy for us the next 4/5 seasons ?

Hey!! Go away. We already have an established Wirral resident Jets fan. We don't need another!

Only joking. Welcome to the forums and the Jets, though perhaps commiserations would be more appropriate. The others have already filled a lot in for you but if you want to know more about what's going on you can follow the Jets beat writers on Twitter or for fan opinion then Gang Green Nation and Turn on the Jets are both pretty good.

Never spotted another Jets fan around here. Will be looking out now though.
